Got to get subtidal this #phycologyfriday with a different member of the kelp #foundationspecies crew than I’m used to these days #giantkelp #macrocystis I found these kelp of noodle stipes pretty fun

First ever chicken of the woods! Cooks up quite nicely

Non-sterile culturing techniques work! What otherwise looks like a dense mat of diatoms masks numerous bull kelp sporophytes! We were ready to scrap this culture and start anew but kelp at resilient! Time to change culturing conditions to promote kelp development

Postelsia from yesterday’s low tide. Swell had dropped enough that I could lay down in them!

I’m jumping on the starter pack bandwagon! Check out these awesome people, institutions, & feeds if you’re interested in the awesome world of #algae. And if you’d like to be added, lmk. 🌊🦑🌾 go.bsky.app/RwMphxS

Get in on the kelp kult!

Thrilled to share data from our newly developed ARKEV module designed for diver-independent #kelp #restoration at #WSN

If Kamala Harris wins Michigan by a few votes, we have Pete Buttigieg to thank. Here he makes the case for Harris in front of 25 undecided voters. That dude is effective.

I know many experts say carbon offsets do nothing for climate Oh, that’s the whole post.

New paper on the state of #fisheries not looking good. Hint: we’ve been wayyy off… doi.org/10.1126/scie...

Wonderful low tide this morning spanning moonset to sunrise

✨Absolutely thrilled✨ to share that I’ll be joining Stanford as an Assistant Professor of Oceans, based at Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey, CA starting January 2025! Stay tuned for exciting opportunities to study kelp forests, algal physiology, microbes, climate change & more!

Got to present my thesis research at PSA yesterday as the first presenter of the Bold Award session! Excited to have shared my results at a new conference, especially one that is being held 10 minutes from where I grew up! #PSA #Kelp

Our bull kelp soral bank tank is shaping up nicely as we approach our first kelp restoration trip of the field season

#phycologyfriday bringing about lots of growth. Bull kelp sporophyte pom-pom from cultures we have prepped for outplanting at our restoration site. 2024 is going to be a good year!

The discovery of 32-million-year-old #kelp holdfasts from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, means that this group of marine foundation species is twice as ancient as previously thought & highlights the vastly different communities that kelps have supported over time. phys.org/news/2024-01...

Lessoniopsis littoralis! Pictured at the southern end of its range in Big Sur. Less frequently found than its wave-loving low-intertidal counterpart Postelsia palmaeformis

What better first post than some #phycologyfriday content featuring Bryopsis and Egregia
