Epic Games certainly has issues of their own but their victory over Apple is an unqualified win for developers and consumers. Epic did this at considerable financial cost and real potential harm to their business. It appears Valve are not the only ones in gaming capable of playing the long game.

New word discovery: exceptible Used when something is deemed acceptable but only on an exception basis

Call me crazy but Switch 2 at $450 is insane. Read the room.

One of the major reasons that generative AI or LLMs seem so impressive is that they're trained against high quality human created content. As AI-"generated" content becomes ubiquitous the dilution and corruption of training data will lead to it its own recursive AI hellscape.

On 2012 Macbook Pro 10,1 running Linux Elementary OS 8 found that brightness controls weren't working. Manually adjusting brightness under gmux_backlight were reflecting in brightness file but not affecting value in actual_brightness. Fixed with: sudo setpci -v -H1 -s 00:01.00 BRIDGE_CONTROL=0

Congratulations to the GIMP team on their massive 3.0 release that's been in the works for decades. Significant changes include non-destructive editing, move to GTK3, enhancements to color management, and a change to release process with a focus on smaller releases. A major achievement.

The problem with hot takes is that they're always wrong and lack self awareness.

Those complaining that the new implementation was not done in Rust or their other personal favorite language is wild. The TS team has well articulated their rationale for picking Go after having surveyed and prototyped multiple implementations. This is why we can't have nice things. 1/

In 2022, Japan changed its age of adulthood from 20 to 18. This allowed for those 18 to enter into contracts or marry without parental consent but did not allow for purchase of alcohol or tobacco or allow for gambling. 1/

As people increasingly give up their agency to tech algorithms and as trust in AI from consumers increases, the risk of deliberate manipulation of AI insights becomes inevitable. We collectively need to demand that all LLMs and reasoning AIs should be open source and open to audit.

Lol. Just realized that iPhones are hardware dongles to iMessage.

The recent advances in game preservation using static recompilation methods seen with N64 have been amazing. And now we see Sonic Unleashed for Xbox 360 going through the same process and features uncapped frame rate, ultra wide screen, resolution upscaling, and more. Absolute legends.

Installed Linux onto a 2012 Macbook Pro 15. Ultimately ended up in what seems like a much better place than when I tried earlier on a 2017 model. Was touch and go for a while and tried several distros before landing on Ubuntu but had originally planned Fedora.

Did anyone else as a kid think that life in the past must have been grainy, black and white, and low frame rate?

We make such a big deal about smartphones and the internet in terms of life altering modern inventions but those wouldn't even be in my top 5. Running water to your home would be my top. I can't think of a bigger impact to my personal quality of life. More than electricity. More than cars.

Misinformation about GE crops is rampant. Some facts: GMOs do NOT change our DNA. Or cause cancer. Or autoimmunity. Or inflammation. Or any health issues blamed on them. Every organism has DNA. You’re always eating DNA. Your body digests it the same. news.immunologic.org/p/gmos-arent...

Online led to the demise of gaming. Fight me.

Apple is ending their E2E encryption for iCloud in the UK ostensibly due to their commitment to never allow back doors as required by UK law. While denying the backdoor is the right answer their solution seems a bit like taking their encryption ball home with them and leaves consumers no better off.

"DEI". You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

US Space Force releases photo of earth taken by X-37B space plane from orbit. How will flat earth respond?

Tell me how Apple is supposedly consumer friendly again?

PC gaming exceptionalism after Valve confirms you don't own your games, only licensing them temporarily.

Random keep 'em honest PSA on PC gaming.

Is there a word that describes something that would be the figurative opposite of the "Avengers"? Where instead of the best, most capable person for each role you get the worst, least capable team assembled? Because I feel like we're going to need that word.

Never got into Castlevania or the sequels on the NES or SNES and now I feel like I'm missing out. Tried playing Symphony of the Night on the Playstation and didn't enjoy the meandering navigation and gameplay although the visuals were gorgeous. Do these games require nostalgia or do they hold up?
