"Story is all about the magic of connection. Stories move past our assumptions, past our defenses, and, if weā€™re lucky, they burrow straight into our hearts." ā€”Newbery Medalist Rebecca Stead (Full interview next month at mrschureads.com.)

"...For all the big talk about putting an end to ā€œsocial engineering,ā€ the Great Resegregation is itself a radical attempt to socially engineer America to be poorer, whiter, less equal, and less democratic..." Feature, not a bug. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Definitely sounds like an AI phishing expedition.

We could make fun of this in so many ways, but telling people, "We are poor because transgender people are taking all the money," should be uncomfortably familiar to people familiar with 20th century history.

DOGE staffer Gavin Kliger has amplified Nick Fuentes & called for a pardon of Derek Chauvin. As of 2/7/25, Kliger was still employed by Databricksā€”backed by DOGE advisor Marc Andreessenā€™s VC firm, which has hired Daniel Penny (recently acquitted of manslaughter re: a Black manā€™s death) 2/7/25 1/

Your near daily reminder that when Musk bought Twitter he fired the custodians and stopped ordering toilet paper šŸ§»

The way she spoke to him was like an adult to a misbehaving child and I think that works?

These are the words of former NFL player Chris Kluwe to the Huntington Beach City Council before he was arrested for his act of civil disobedience. We must speak out. We must show up. Courage is contagious.

Breaking news: President Trump abruptly dismissed the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a social media post, delivering a blow to the militaryā€™s top brass as the Trump administration moves to align the Pentagon with its ā€œAmerica Firstā€ agenda.

Oh my god, if this works it would redeem the whole damn week.

WaPo Page One: ā€œIf youā€™re going to just yell at me, thatā€™s not going to be an effective town hall,ā€ McCormick said .. ā€œBut weā€™re pissed!ā€ a woman shouted. #GA07 www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Sometimes, one good book can supercharge your professional development. That was the experience of these district librarians, who say they were motivated by particular titles to refocus their work or their advocacy. Here are the books that inspired them and why

Do not give in to preemptive fear. Do not obey in advance.

I hesitate to give interviews about book banning as I feel that other authors have been much more targeted (in super scary ways) than I and are more deserving of sympathy & protection. But I thought, I would try to explain the pain ā€œsoft banningā€ also causes: www.themarysue.com/the-receptio...

Why, yes, I am posting from the library

I hope youā€™re reading something great this weekend. Iā€™m diving into A World Worth Saving.

Your periodic reminder that, 150 years ago, a desire to read fiction was considered both a sign of mental illness in women and a symptom of it. The groups devoted to banning some books because they're "immoral", "obscene", etc. are just growths from the same bad root.

"As you watch President Donald Trump and Elon Musk recklessly attempt to destroy the federal government like a pair of toddlers picking legs off a spider, it seems as if Republicans have decided public opinion no longer constrains them in the least."

How exactly will they know that their "failure to respond" to some random A.I. big balls email will mean this? Via Twitter? What is the deadline to respond? Which employees? Because, for example, a/d military are under contract & can't just resign. This lunatic must be stopped. #killtheDOGE

Meanwhile, over at the CIAā€¦

A bit like the insistent British historical trolling of US ā€œprecision bombingā€ of Nazi sh*t vs British ā€œarea bombingā€ of Nazi sh*t in WWII In reality, there was little technical precision possible, but calling it that felt better.

Keep ā€˜em coming

And we got finger-wagged by a New England journo "expert" for not staying in our lane and sticking to our knitting (his words) and leaving hard stuff to (paywalled) NYT and Wapo. So we were right, and we did the right thing, and we didn't need anyone's permission to make our own news decisions.

Keep it going! #TeslaTakedown

šŸ“¢Veterans, now is the time to raise hell! While Trump & Musk fire critical VA staff, House Republicans are rushing through bills to GUT Veteransā€™ care. They think no one will fight back. Prove them wrong. Speak out. Spread the word. MORE: www.military.com/daily-news/o...

I have never doubted for one second that Trump is a rapist. The way he talks about Ukraine really confirms it. Ukraine sure as fuck wasnā€™t asking to be invaded.

ā€œI expect growing militancy out of the sector to respond to this and other threats.ā€ inthesetimes.com/article/fede...

Kash Patel's confirmation by 51 Republicans is an appallingly dangerous act. Who believes what he told them in his hearings? ā€œThere will be no retributive actions taken by any FBI should I be confirmed as the FBI director," he said. And, ā€œThere should be no politics in the FBI.ā€ Tough days ahead.

...if I am a human being who writes, and who sends my stories out into the world for people to read, then I must have the courage to make a commitment to the unknown and the unknowable (in the sense of intellectual proof), the world of love and particularity which gives light to the darkness.

How can we know that Trump works for Putin? 1. He calls democratically-elected Zelensky a dictator, but he has never called true dictator Putin that. 2. He calls for elections in Ukraine, but not in Russia. 3. He wants to impoverish Ukraine & enrich Russia, etc.

They arenā€™t helpless. Theyā€™re complicit. I have absolutely no sympathy for them at all. Project 2025 laid out this entire game plan and either they didnā€™t believe it would happen (which was dumb), or they did believe it and they stupidly thought it would never show up on their door. Reap meets sow.

Hear, hear!

Now is the time for all personal-injury lawyers, class-action filers, ambulance-chasers, & Slippinā€™ Jimmys to bond together to show the king just how expensive neglecting human needs can be The civil service is, by contrast, thrift itself

@neeratanden.bsky.social's returning to lead the Center for American Progress is great news for CAP & also for serious pragmatic liberal policy solutions and a Democratic response to Trump, Musk, & Vance. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/u...
