Great Amanda Taub column featuring the awesome @pagefortna.bsky.social among many others who note what a huge change this is in American foreign policy www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/w...

This is absolutely horrible.

The fate of democracies hangs in the balance in the U.S. and Europe. How should majority-minority rights be balanced? Join @dziblatt.bsky.social for a one-day #democracy conference @wzbdemocracy.bsky.social @wzb.bsky.social 📅 Feb 28 9:15am-5:15pm ➡️ ow.ly/4trY50V5JGX

This is what happens in a context where there is no party stepping up to defend trans rights (all LGBTQ+ items mentioned were actually about trans rights).

The youth gender divide is real and important, but it can mask the fact that the populist right is gaining ground among young women as well as young men in many countries (this was also true in the US). AfD tripled their vote share among 18-24 year old men, but the same was true of young women.

Super interesting change. Giving the young voters someone they can relate with may also explain (some) of the gains of the Linke among young voters.

This framing is super important Coverage has often implied there's something 'wrong' with men: "why are they lurching right?" But in many countries, the strongest ideological shift has been among young women.

Very interesting paper on the construction of race. "people with the same detailed skin tone, recorded by the Freedman's Bank (1865-1874), were more likely racialized as White or Mulatto by the 1870 Census if they were wealthier or literate" papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Another way to look at the fall of the Greens. Look at how they have been replaced by Linke as the party of the female youth:

This aligns with longstanding robust evidence of minimal campaign effects in political science. Yet, that doesn’t make interference any less grave.

Women vote less for the far-right in virtually all elections. *BUT* the narrative that far-right growth is driven primarily by men—while women move in the opposite direction—doesn’t seem to hold true (once again, recall the US and UK).

The Left (Die Linke) receives a spectacular result among the very young German voters:

For all the media hype about Sarah Wagenknecht, we will probably read little about the fact that Die Linke has profited massively from her leaving the party. As a clearly left-wing party, now without strong reactionary tendencies, it scored almost twice as much as the left-conservative BSW! #BTW25

Very interesting to look at the age distribution in the exit poll. The SPD which already did very poorly with young voters last time continues to loose further there - a party of pensioners. Interestingly, also huge losses for the Greens among young voters and massive gains for the Linke.

Our new paper is out! In Brazil, election-driven family conflicts are rare, but affect LGB voters disproportionately. LGB voters’ heightened political engagement and strong opposition to Bolsonaro seem to underpin their greater propensity to face election-driven family conflicts.

Very proud of this winter Pride all over Germany. LGBTQ+ rights are under threat around the world. Self-styled centrists show no solidarity. Nominally progressive parties are scapegoating queer people for their own mistakes. Yet, queer people are organizing and resisting 💪❤️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Idea: track how the cost of publishing in A-journals has increased over time (larger samples, more cases, longer time horizons, etc).
