My friend has an autoreply on her personal email that says she is on a "creative break' and will reply when she can. I'm so envious.

Can we reduce polarization with empathy? Just published a new (replication) study with @mrooduijn.bsky.social and Matthijs Gillissen showing that different components of empathy have quite different effects [1/5] www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

I just got called out for setting the oven to 358 degrees. If I wrote a cookbook (don't worry, I won't), the whole thing would consist of instructions like, "bake for 33 minutes at 412 degrees."

Preregistration is a floor, not a ceiling: Use it to specify initial analyses with the understanding that you can and should go further when you see unexpected patterns in the data. Gelman & Brown journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

Excellent advice!

Help Alexander find his people!

Full disclosure - I haven't tried this yet, but I will.

We're hiring a clinical psychologist! This position is on our Thunder Bay campus. You'd be part of a friendly, Psychologydepartment. www.lakeheadu.ca/programs/fac...

Had a paper accepted but they never sent page proofs or responded. Finally withdrew & submitted elsewhere. Student co-author asked "why there?" I gave lengthy explanation of fit. Student said, "no, I mean they already desk rejected this paper years ago." Student is now in charge of remembering.

If you want an account that will just cheer you up, I highly recommend Eli.

Is there a cat lady starter pack? Asking for a friend. Also, in my friend's head, men can definitely be cat ladies.

My students gave very informal research presentations in my psychopathy class yesterday. There was a lot of anxiety, but it ended up being smart, supportive, and dare I say, fun!

I wake up at 3 am to ruminate over my to-do list & stay awake. Somebody told me to play the "alphabet game." You think of a category (I like countries) and slowly run through the alphabet - Algeria, Belgium, Cambodia... I picture each on the map. I've never made it to G without falling back asleep.

The Onion bought Infowars? This is going to be good! www.ctvnews.ca/business/sat...

@retractionwatch.bsky.social, which is a national treasure, is hiring for two amazing accountability science journalism jobs! retractionwatch.com/2024/11/12/r...

hey bluesky, on my way to work today I went to a coffee shop today to buy coffee and there was a lady with a baby in a stroller leaving so I said 'can I grab the door for you?' She said yes so I did then another person said 'can I give you a platypus sticker cuz you were nice?'

If you have any reach on Bluesky, please consider reposting so I can find friends old and new: I'm Alexander Verbeek and publish about the climate crisis, environment, the beauty of nature, science, walking, sustainability, wildlife, photography, water, and energy.

A lot of discussion this week about dominant groups pushing back against women & minorities gaining power. Reposting link to our GPIR Special Issue on "Privilege Lost". (w/ Megan Earle & @mocraig.bsky.social) journals.sagepub.com/toc/gpia/25/3
