Another loss for #science & the next generation of researchers. The 28-year running NIDA summer internship program is cancelled for this year. @altnih4science.bsky.social #SavetheNIH

There are six RDRCs across the country providing essential research on the wellbeing of older adults and people with disabilities. They employ staff who will soon lose their jobs. I received stop work order on my grants from the New York RDRC on Friday. 1/

Please let the GEO/EAR community know: Program Directors and Mission Support who’ve been at NSF under two years were just terminated via Zoom. Even those of us whose offer letter stated one probationary year and whose government data states “permanent”.

What has grant funding ever done for anyone? A lot, it turns out. Grants spur innovation and discoveries. Not just in science. For example: NSF supported research that laid the groundwork for MRIs. and...

Dear NSF scientists and staff: If you're looking to talk to a journalist about what's going on at the agency, please reach out (from a non-governmental phone/computer) via signal @jonlambert.12

New: Last night, hundreds of CDC post-doc fellows were fired, including all in the group who call themselves the "disease detectors," and are the future of public health lab leaders. One senior official told me, "It is going to cripple public health for decades." www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

Saw this crab-sized Huntsman spider in our apartment. Australian colleagues: Great! It will eat the mosquitos.

🥴🥴 Hey so, we’re all volunteering our time pulling this together in a couple of months with zero funding. FEMA cannot legally give us the submissions. You have the option to literally just upload the same pdf. It should not take more than 3 minutes.

I am hiring a lab manager to start ~ July 1st. sjobs.brassring.com/TGnewUI/Sear...

Beautiful day at UNSW.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

I created a R script to see how many times one of those words came up in my recent NSF grant submission. The answer was 355 (!) times. Laughing but crying. Mostly crying. Here's the code if you want to try it on your grant: github.com/calvinklai/d...

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Some updates from NSF today, including some FAQs. new.nsf.gov/executive-or...

I am one of these NSF postdocs. NSF has frozen everyone’s access to their salaries and research stipends (that were already awarded) with no information about when they might be expected to be unfrozen. It still appears like we are expected to continue doing our work though.

Somewhere in the U.S., there’s a scientist staring at their NSF/NIH grant application wondering why they bother. This post is for you. Science and society both need you. Hang in there and know there is a whole community supporting you.

Just called my senators and representative to oppose the federal funding freeze. If you want help deciding what to say my colleagues created this template - customized for Tennessee concerns about research grants but easily modifiable for other states and issues. 1/ docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Working w/ a reporter on the consequences of the NIH/NSF freezes (e.g., training pipelines, how grants support clinical time for trials) If you've had a grant impacted, some organizational perspective (e.g., in APPIC leadership/DCT role) + are willing to share your experience please shoot me a DM

In response to orders from the Trump White House, the National Science Foundation has canceled all of its grant review panels for this week. This follows the National Institutes of Health canceling its grant review panels earlier. This is a huge disruption to US science.

Know a talented undergraduate who wants to pursue a PhD in neuroscience but has had limited research opportunities? Our 2-year postbacc program, iDREAM (Iowa: Diversifying Research Experiences And Mentorship) is accepting applications now! idream.sites.uiowa.edu (Review begins Feb.3)

🚨 Trump’s order halting NIH communication is catastrophic: 🔬 Grant funding delayed = stalled research & careers. 👨‍🔬Science can’t wait—contact your reps & demand this harmful pause be lifted NOW! #ScienceNotSilence #SupportNIH www.science.org/content/arti...

Today a reporter reached out to me after seeing posts I made on Bluesky about what’s going on at NIH. Keep typing, keep talking, keep shouting, because your voice goes beyond the void.

Really thankful to all of the scientists who made themselves available to talk to me about the unprecedented situation at NIH. I've never had so many people reach out to me for a story like this. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Big Announcement! Years in the making! #HigherEdSky #AcademicSky I've written a book! Learn more about the Maplewood College Compendium and how it can enhance your teaching, your staff development and more! open.substack.com/pub/drdeveau...

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

ProPublica is interested in covering these developments and will keep communications private and secure. You can reach out to www.propublica.org/people/annie...

Email is overwhelming - especially at the start of a new year. To gain control of your inbox, try the Stack Method: +Stop filing emails into folders. Just archive them. Filing wastes time. +Triage email. Emails are not all equally important. Use inbox time to sort emails into priority bins.

Murray Rose Pool is beautiful if you ever get a chance to visit. On the harbor. Has islands you can swim to. Surrounded by a deck. Anywhere else you’d recommend I visit in Australia?

Are you a cognitive psychologist and want to come work with me and other cool people?!? Look no further! Apply by Feb 10 for full consideration. I’m happy to answer questions about my first year here at NDSU prd.hcm.ndus.edu/psc/recruit/...

Hi #AcademicSky - anyone willing to share an example of a sponsor statement (by the primary mentor) for a K99/R00 application? First-time sponsor here. (Had trainees for F32, LRP, co-mentor, etc.) My current postdoc fellow is applying and I want to make sure my statement is on point! 🤓💻🙏🏻
