"A 'Mother Carey's chicken' hovered round the wreck while we were on board, and followed us to the Sunbeam...all looked upon our visitor as the harbinger of a breeze. In this instance, at least, the well-known sailor's superstition was justified..." Atlantic 13.7.1876. #FolkloreThursday #Brassey

Here's the answer to our Where have we been We were at the North Tower at Pevensey Castle. This very fine and fancy tower with it's garderobes (toilet's) was built c.1250. It unfortunately had a little disaster by 1317, whereby the towers roof fell, taking with it the floor boards and vault!

“This is nice behaviour, that I write to you again and again, and you pay no attention to me.” This almost 4,000-year-old Babylonian letter in clay is proof that we have been finding ways to say “per my last email” for some time

🌈✨ Happy LGBTQ+ History Month! Today, we honour the incredible Virginia Woolf, a pioneering British writer and key figure of the 20th century. Born in 1882, Woolf was a trailblazer in discussing women's rights and mental health, and her work continues to inspire us today. @artukdotorg.bsky.social

Left is a pic of a mosaic from our West wing. Compared to a similar design from the North Wing you suddenly realize how utterly off the scale the quality was on the West wing.

Tonight, many Hindus around the world will be celebrating #MahaShivaratri (‘Great Night of Shiva’) in honour of the god Shiva. In this statue the deity appears as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, which represents the duality of his nature as both a creator and destroyer, and signifies cosmic balance.
