Australopithecus at Sterkfontein had primarily plant-based diets similar to herbivores, with no regular consumption of mammalian meat, shown by enamel-bound nitrogen and carbon isotopes. The authors suggest this indicates meat intake did not drive brain expansion in early hominins. - Lüdecke et al.:

Last week @davidolusoga.bsky.social gave the annual National Humanities Lecture at the University of London. This was a superb account of how public history promotes and communicates academic research beyond HE. David's lecture is now available and is highly recommended bit.ly/3Qd1x5i #skystorians

Simulations show Australopithecus afarensis could run bipedally but at speeds below modern humans, with a limited endurance range. Energy costs aligned with similarly sized animals. Enhanced running likely evolved via changes in muscle anatomy and body proportions. - Bates et al.:

By far the most viewed article I have written this year was looking at recent Margaret Beaufort-related discoveries in Pembroke, Collyweston and Cambridge. You can read more about them below (and don't forget so subscribe - big plans in 2025!) nathenamin.substack.com/p/margaret-b...

Cod was regularly caught by early modern fishers. It was the most widely eaten fish across Europe (esp in the form of 'stockfish'), but was less popular in Britain.🎣 In 1685-1704 records suggest that the Shetland fishery failed due to The Little Ice Age.❄️ Map from my #AtlasOfEarlyModernWildlife 📗

Colin Renfrew has passed away. A hugely influential figure in archaeology throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries. Here are a few photos of him from about 15years ago, when I was working on his Keros Project.

This gold #Thracian pectoral features a very abstract image of a lion, presumably giving strength to whomever wore it. It was laid across a cuirass in a high-status warrior's tomb in the Bashova Tumulus, Bulgaria. 475-425 BCE. 🏺 #Ancientbluesky Plovdiv, Regional Archaeological Museum (1514) 📸 me

Anyone looking to understand the Social War and Sulla: this is the most up-to-date narrative we have. And it’s cheap as!

My book, Early English Queens, 850-1000, is currently 25% off at Routledge. As an added bonus, it also now comes with fewer typos - one of the benefits of the move to ebooks & print on demand.

As is often the case with Richard III, whenever anything relating to him hits the news, there's a lot of noise. Science and linguistics hurts my modest brain, but THANKFULLY, as usual, Matt Lewis is here to explain the Voice for Richard III project in depth medievalmatt.substack.com/p/a-voice-fo...
