Grab your (taco) passport, y'all— we're going on a delicious adventure. Miguel Cobos of Vaquero Taquero, in Austin, is rallying Texas restaurants to participate in his project benefiting immigration nonprofits. www.texasmonthly.com/food/vaquero...

The Dallas City Council finally did the right thing. Except the mayor and Carolyn King Arnold, who didn't show up for the long-delayed vote. And Cara Mendelsohn, who voted no. www.dallasnews.com/news/environ...

Oh. And some professional news. www.dallasnews.com/opinion/comm...

Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it. I've been so fortunate to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.

Et tu, @texasmonthly.bsky.social.

We are living through Republicanism boiled down to its essence: Everyone should be deprived of everything, because otherwise, somebody I don't like might get something I don't want them to have. We call it an ideology, but it's really a personality: Greedy, withholding, suspicious, angry, cruel.

#OTD on January 28, 1918, Texas Rangers massacred fifteen men and boys at the village of Porvenir, Texas, in what is perhaps the single most notorious and consequential event in the history of the Ranger Force. /1

Take a break from your regularly scheduled doomscrolling and marvel at this clip. A jawdropping feat of editing by Questlove - incredible!

Given that Braxton Bragg was an incompetent racist traitor who was utterly despised by his officers and soldiers, it makes sense that a bottom-scraper like Hegseth would adore him.

Dr.Phil embedding with an ICE raid in Chicago is the most insane shit I’ve ever heard

My latest song "Aces Over Deuces" has finally dropped. It is some heavy guitar + a bit of spacey guitar + some guitar vocal lines + some more guitar (and drums). This came together as 2 separate riffs - one of which I've been trying to figure out what to do with for many months. #musicsky (🎶🔗🧵)

I love this so much! At the inauguration, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wore a distinctive collar adorned with cowrie shells, which are believed to offer protection from evil in African traditions. This choice mirrors the late Justice Ginsburg’s practice of using collars to convey a message.

So on day two of this dreadful pass we have come to, I just want to let people know what I’m going to do… my lane is race religion and democracy. That’s what I’ve been doing for most of my career, and especially after 1/6. I will continue to do the same.

Speaking of authors it would be great for more folks to read- Martha Jones, Birthright Citizens.

On birthright citizenship, lots of hot takes here. Mine, it has been simmering near a boil for more than a decade.

Guess it's important to reiterate that millions of left, liberal, and progressive American Jews do not consider themselves/ourselves to be represented by the ADL and have not for a very long time.

How many of you have thrown away original research from 20-25 years ago (first book)? It's so hard...do I need to keep it? Maybe? Maybe not? All that labor! And much of this didn't make it into the book. 🗃️

No, we can't agree to disagree. This isn't sports. This isn't us rooting for 2 different teams and the winner of the game has no impact on your life, my life or our kids' lives. You support someone who promises to hurt me and people I love. As Charlie Chaplin said, "I don't shake hands with Nazis."

Vivek's involvement with DOGE lasted negative Scaramuccis

As someone who has been online in one way or another for over 35 yrs, I look on TikTok the way elves look upon the death of a human. Perhaps sad at its passing, but aware it will soon be replaced. I know of a graveyard full of dead platforms, with names no one speaks aloud anymore, and it is there.

It was always Jimmy

WaPo is looking for new and innovative ways to drive away remnants of their subscribers, so they hired Rahm Emanuel.

Can a headline alone be eligible for a Pulitzer?

I would proudly serve as the Bojangles Professor of Southern History if anyone’s offering

The Soviet Union built a domestic tea industry in Georgia's Caucasus Mountains. But after 1989, it was mostly abandoned. Georgian tea makers are now reclaiming the fields and long-overgrown tea forests. Here's a thread about how we're involved.

"CEO said a thing!" pseudo-journalism where you just lazily parrot CEO statements (without any correction, historical context, or objective contrasting expert or academic insights) remains my favorite type of pseudo-journalism

Watching Katy Tur interview David Ortiz of LAFD saying that they could have had an army of firefighters stationed at the ready and they couldn't have saved the Palisades. It was a perfect storm with hurricane level winds, no humidity and it just exploded. Trump needs to shut his pie hole.

Anyone have a debut book coming out this spring? Tell me about it — it’d be nice to hear about something nice! Your first book only happens once, friend!

I was interviewed at CES this morning. We mentioned that consumers will decide whether they want to be on a platform that is “unfiltered free speech “ or “ moderated”. I mentioned that I loved @bsky.app , and spontaneously people started clapping 🔥.

Does anyone have a contact for Ann ? Would love to discuss with her the possibility of partnering with her to publish her cartoons exclusively on @bluesky

@audacityofdespair.bsky.social I don’t think you can have Jimmy and Bunk without Popeye Doyle and Cloudy Russo. I especially like the gap in Hackman’s eyebrow showing he was a Golden Gloves kid. 1971 NYC to 2001 Ballmrrr and natural police still swimming upstream.

John Roberts: peaceful protests targeting me are bad. Also John Roberts: If the President wants to sic violent protests on a co-equal branch of government, that's totally cool.

jimmy fallon joining bluesky after the news dropped that his show was stopping his workers pay during the writers strike in 2023 and immediately getting bullied off of here forever is easily one of my favorite early bluesky moments

Waymo is peak American innovation. With way less money they could have built a reliable public transport network, but instead someone was like "what if we could find a way for empty vehicles to contribute to traffic too? There's no reason we can't have more cars on the road than there are drivers"

"things were better when we did everything by hand" we've had a broken dishwasher for a week and we gotta wash every single dish by hand and lemme tell you actually that shit sucks
