The thing about womanhood is we’re suppose to take us as little space as possible, be caregivers to everyone but ourselves, be comfortable being uncomfortable, and smile as a second class citizen. Biking is one of my ways of just saying NO to that insane paradigm and YES to everyday playful joy.

People tell me to be safe while biking, and while I appreciate it, what I'd really appreciate is people going a step further and pondering why they think biking is unsafe. Because then they'd have to grapple with the fact that we've designed our society to make biking "dangerous" for many people.

Dutch planners are experts in "Induced Demand", in this case, bike-share bikes. Every train station in the Netherlands rents bikes to train pass holders for €4.65 (about $5US) for 24 hours These OV-fiets in Utrecht are all gone by 10AM. Induced Demand for bikes (and for good transit + bike lanes).

So much of the coverage of bike lanes fails to accurately identify the stakes for those supporting infrastructure and those opposed to it. @momentummag.bsky.social really nails the dynamic, and I wish stories about "local opposition" were more focused on identifying who is speaking out and why.
