This week’s listening.

Very sad news about David Johansen: I loved the Dolls OGWT appearance - androgynous, chaotic, ludicrous and hard rocking. I interviewed Johansen in 2022 and he sharp and funny. Farewell - you really made a contribution

Has there ever been a band with better hair than Bananarama? #TOTP

Fun story. (Gift link)

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within #NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (#NWS), is profoundly alarming. 1/11

I am now hearing from multiple folks in the past two hours (including some who have personally been fired) that mass firings have now commenced within NOAA--including, yes, at the National Weather Service.

Oh, man, not Gene Hackman. 2025 can just fuck right off. Okay. Let me tell you a little bit about Gene Hackman...

Jerry Butler, Gwen McRae, Bill Fay and now Roberta Flack all gone. What a rotten few days.

On Mido’s birthday, a reminder of The Greatest Crossbar Challenge Of All Time. HAVE IT.

This week’s listening.

Wu Hu!

I’M HELEN STEPHENS AND I’M HAVING A PARTY AND THE OTHER TENANTS ARE THERE, AND A FEW FRIENDS, AND WE’D LIKE YOU TO JOIN US IN WISHING SO TOUGH BY THE SAINT ETIENNE A VERY HAPPY 32ND BIRTHDAY

First Jerry Butler and now Gwen McCrae. What a shitty day #RIP youtu.be/8r3jLi6szNw

RIP Jerry Butler, a soul statesman whose elegant records are just as gorgeous and sustaining now as they have ever been.

Utterly unsurprising. Any climate scientists should start looking for jobs outside the US as they’ll be coming for you soon.

Putin should have a bash at annexing Alaska. Not as if Trump will mind.

Just been reminded of one of my favourite stories from the old days of television. Dag Hammarskjöld, UN secretary general, was due in for a Panorama. Before he arrived, they needed to line up the cameras, so floor manager Albert Stevenson, later a distinguished LE producer was asked to step in.

Reading the memoirs of a Tory Chief Whip would usually be way down on my to do list. Extracts though have me intrigued. Not least the brothel creeper and his taxi journey.

Rick Buckler: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Endq...

Word going around about the passing of UK drummer Rick Buckler. If you loved the Jam, you loved him. A diamond moment I come back to regularly is this specific track: the rushed drums in the build to the final part, the double two-hits and then BLAM into that conclusion. “BREAK IT UP!”

Not even this recommendation could get me to pay a fiver for this single.

1967. Easy to forget now that at one point W.H. Smith sold more records than any other UK retailer

This week’s listening.

Then Play Long update, this one written by @agincourtgirl.bsky.social about her own life at the time, and then the strangely hapless Gary Barlow (many thanks to @whenisbirths.bsky.social for his biographical assistance): nobilliards.blogspot.com/2025/02/gary...

Only one thing from the charity shop today. Thought I had a bargain at £1.65 even though it’s missing its dust jacket. Then got it home and opened the first page…

‘Magnets, but it’s got electrolytes’

I’m a Led Zeppelin agnostic but really enjoyed ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’, not least for the thrill of hearing Shirley Bassey singing ‘Goldfinger’ at full blast on the big screen.

This is a really nice, simple distillation of the vital role NOAA and the NWS play and how private companies cannot replace what they do.

This week’s listening.

What a lineup. Look forward to checking this out.

Watched ‘The Beast’. Seeing George MacKay in a Beatles jacket in 1963 Paris made me wonder how The Beatles would’ve evolved if they’d paid their dues there instead of Hamburg.

Opening track on the fantastic Soul Jazz compilation ‘Hustle! Reggae Disco’.

You just know that Trump’s goons are going to go after the National Weather Service and replace Ken Graham with a climate change denier.
