Another preventable tragedy 😔

We are crowd sourcing reductions in graduate admissions and hiring freezes across biomedical research and higher ed in response to pauses in NIH funding and EO’s. If you have information if you could add to this spreadsheet, it would be greatly appreciated!: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

To reiterate: we WILL NOT host rallies at sites without a lead and a team. So, if you want to attend a rally in a state that is red or grey, you gotta step up! #standupforscience @standupforscience.bsky.social

In light of policies to defund biomedical research, and with judicial hearings happening today, we hope to highlight the many ways biomedical research improves people's lives, and to convey how damaging the proposed cuts would be... not just for us researchers, but for everyone.

State AGs are looking for federal workers who have just been illegally fired to stand as litigants in a new lawsuit trying to freeze further action by DOGE. DM me if that’s you and you’re interested and you’re live in one of the following states: NM, AZ, CA, CT, MD, MI, MN, NV, OR, WA, RI, or VT.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

We must still celebrate great science and scientists. The new class of American Academy of Microbiology Fellows were announced today and include many ⭐ including @kimingeneva.bsky.social @hittingerlab.bsky.social @goleylab.bsky.social @bladerlab.bsky.social @drjdennehy.bsky.social and..

ASM stands firm in its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, as such efforts are critical to advancing the microbial sciences for everyone. Read our statement: asm.org/Press-Releas...

I’m glad to see this statement from ASM. And I appreciate the voices and perspectives of everyone who participated in the recent town hall. Now more than ever, we need to stand together in support of science and each other. Together means all of us, each of us. This is the way forward.

The abrupt terminations of more than 1,000 employees, including new Epidemic Intelligence Officers, across CDC are deeply disturbing. For more than 70 years, EIS officers have served on America’s front line as its disease detectives, ready at a moment’s notice to respond to emerging outbreaks.

🧵 US states that implemented abortion bans saw higher than expected infant mortality rates, with larger increases among Black infants and those in southern states, according to this analysis of US national vital statistics data from 2012–2023. ja.ma/4aVchPn #MedSky

Today's nice results from @towsonu.bsky.social micro class. First time streaks for single isolates. So proud.

🧵 The Fight Has Come to Them: Science, Institutions & The Indirects Cut I want to take a moment to talk about the perspective behind these slides I put together. I’ve framed them to be as nonpartisan as possible—but in a moment this polarized, there are limits here. 1/

BREAKING: Federal judge temporarily blocks NIH indirect costs rate cap issued Friday as applied to states that sued over the act this morning. Judge Angel Kelley, a Biden appointee, ordered further briefing as well, and set a hearing on Feb 21 in the case. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Many people, including academics, don't understand what F&A is for. Please share to help. 1) Translate to "overhead" in common business accounting: 60% IDC => 60/160 = 37.5% overhead (low!) 2) Infographic explaining what it's for, linked here: www.cogr.edu/sites/defaul...

New preprint! We find a novel signal of positive selection in georeferenced genotype data, then use this signal to identify in-progress selective sweeps in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Reminder that today is a great day to call our congressional reps

Total NIH funding cuts by state. This can be helpful when talking to your representatives www.datawrapper.de/_/Y0Pnk/

Here’s @lizneeley.bsky.social’s latest newsletter, documenting the ongoing attacks on science and higher ed, and figuring out what to focus on: buttondown.com/liminalcreat...

YES. Need to say this loudly and often! This 2.46x is also the short-term ROI. Long-term ROI (more difficult to estimate) may ~10x. Highest for any gov't spending. And the source of discoveries necessary for all new drugs (industry important too but without NIH funded science there's no foundation)

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

This is the kind of simple and direct message we need right now: long-term damage aside, this attack is going to very quickly make it even harder for people to have the jobs and medical care they need.

Science Bluesky energy is like

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Really could have used a Draft folder on Bluesky today…

One of the keywords is “female” 🙃🙃🙃

According to a senior CDC official, some of the pages that were removed on Friday have been reinstated due to backlash from the scientific community and the public. Keep speaking up, it matters!

SOME GOOD NEWS ABOUT NIH FUNDING Closed sessions of institute and center Advisory Counsel meetings are now permitted. This is where grant applications are discussed and approved for potential funding. Open sessions where there are public presentations and discussions are still not allowed.

Final version of our cephalopod sex chromosome paper is up! Cool project led by graduate student Gabby Coffing. We have more octo popgen in the works so stay tuned! www.cell.com/current-biol...

Checked on the article I wrote about Juneteenth in 2023… ”under review”

This is not acceptable @asm.org

It's a chaotic time. Have you eaten something today? Taken your meds? Gone for a walk outside? Called a friend recently or made plans to see one in person? It's tempting to rot in bed or doomscroll all day. I get it. You still deserve moments of joy and enough time to rest.

Hello all. Finally made my way to 🦋. Looking for my people in host defense, innate immunology, bacterial pathogenesis and lung biology! Please help me find you!
