Nuttall's Violet (Viola nuttallii) is one of the early flowering violets. Look for it in a grassland habitat. Plant named after Thomas Nuttall, an English botanist and zoologist who lived and worked in America from 1808 until 1841 (Wikipedia).

Not only are Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) #butterfly novel for early spring appearance, snow can still be on the ground, but they are Holarctic in distribution. Known as Camberwell Beauty in Britain.

As snow recedes in coming weeks (mid-March - early April) you may encounter a hard-to-believe juxtaposition...a butterfly on snow. Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) pictured in such a scenario. Comma and Tortoiseshell #butterfly overwinter as adults, break hibernation with snow patches on ground.

Hey Republicans, get Shadow President Musk to examine your own inefficiencies. You don't need large staff, health insurance, satellite offices, travel expenses, etc. especially since you are not using your legislative/spending purposes (ceding it to the dictator in training) to control expenses.

Male Juniper Haircap Moss (Polytrichum juniperinum) plants are conspicuous here in western Montana come late March. Found in just about every State north of Mexico including Canada. Mostly found growing in dry mineral soil.

We're about a month out before the first overwintering adult #butterfly will be seen on the landscape. Pictured is a Hoary Comma (Polygonia gracilis) found in western MT (distributed throughout the West). Get ready to discover... imagewildlife.com/mud-is-key-f...
