In these days when love is in short supply, we who follow Jesus are called to love generously. We are see the world, with its myriad hates, biases, privileges, and complexities, and love through it all, living out the fullness of truth, that the most precious commodity in the world is love,

Good morning, beloved. Today is a day that we’ve never seen before, and a day that we’ll never see again. Sounds like a great day to overcome evil with good.

(1/2)Dr. Anderson Ruffin Abbott(1837–1913), Canada’s first Black doctor. Born in Toronto, served as a surgeon in the Civil War, caring for Black Union soldiers. He was a guest the Lincoln White House. He stood vigil at Lincoln’s bedside as he was dying. Mary Lincoln gave him a shawl of Lincoln’s.

Stanley G. Grizzle (1929–2022), born to Jamaican immigrants, fought for racial equality as a sleeping car porter, union leader, & Canada’s 1st Black citizenship court judge. Honored with the Order of Canada in 2010, his legacy inspires. “Loving people is my greatest accomplishment.” #BlackHistory

Benjamin Jackson(1791–1864)born in Nova Scotia to parents who escaped slavery. He joined the Union Army, serving on war ships. He was injured when a mine exploded, permanently losing partial use of his right hand. He was honorably discharged & returned to his family in Lockhartville, where he farmed

Africville was a vibrant, tight-knit black community in Halifax, Nova Scotia in spite of racism and marginalization. Taxed by Halifax yet receiving no basic services (like water, sewage or electricity), the residents were forcibly relocated in the 1960’s to make way for industrialization of the area

Dr. Clotilda Douglas-Yakimchuk (1932-2021) was a pioneering Canadian nurse and community activist. She was the first Black graduate of Nova Scotia Hospital School of Nursing, founded the Black Community Development Organization, and was an advocate in environment and health issues.

When the very institutions that provided safety, education, and health are under attack, we need to put our love into acts of resistance. There can be no sitting on the sidelines. What will your acts of love look like in public? How will you help return love to the public square?

Mary Bibb (1820-1877) is considered to be one of the first black women journalist in Canada (she wrote many of the articles for The Voice of the Fugitive, published by Bibb and her husband). Her home was a rest stop for many on the Underground Railroad She was also an educator and abolitionist.

Henry Bibb was an escaped slave, abolitionist, and publisher of the first black newspaper in Canada: The Voice of the Fugitive, which included stories of the Underground Railroad, editorials on abolition, and resources for newly emigrated blacks in Canada.

Chloe Cooley was an enslaved woman in what is now Canada. Witnesses to the cruelty she endured at the hands of her enslaver was the catalyst for the passage of the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada in 1793. This law paved the way for the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire (1833)

Mathieu da Costa (born c. 1589): first recorded Black person in what is now Canada. A free Black man, he arrived in Nova Scotia in the early 1600’s. He spoke multiple languages: Portuguese, French, pidgin, & several Indigenous languages and was a translator for European traders and settlers.

David George (1742-1810) endured slavery in the States before coming to Nova Scotia as a black loyalist. He established a Black Baptist church in Shelburne which included whites. (1/3)

Viola Desmond (1914–1965), pioneering Black Canadian businesswoman &civil rights activist. In 1946, she refused to move to the balcony of a New Glasgow, NS movie theater, resulting in arrest, but also becoming a flashpoint in Canadian civil rights. She is the first woman featured alone on a $10 bill

Elijah McCoy (1844-1929) inventions included the automatic lubricating cup, which allowed steam engines to operate more efficiently. The phrase “the real McCoy is believed to have originated as a tribute to the reliability and effectiveness of his inventions. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackLivesMatter

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.
