An astonishing headline reporting on new observations from a team led to Nikku Madhusudhan claims they’ve found ‘hints of life’ on a planet orbiting a dwarf star some 124 light years away. What’s going on? (1/n) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... 🔭 🧪

www.mprnews.org/story/2025/0... Plagiarism is an epidemic + national journalists need to vet their experts better before all rushing to anoint the same “stars”

At this point, more due process and mechanisms for appeal are applied to moderating hate speech, terrorist propaganda, and calls for violence on social media than to who's sent from the US to camps in El Salvador...

It also must be stated plainly that even if he were all those things, it still wouldn't be okay to abduct him, bypass his right to due process, & traffic him to an overseas concentration camp. There's nothing he could have done that would justify any of that. There's no scenario in which it's okay.

These two posts: * “We need to treat antifa and BLM like terrorist organizations,” said Joe Kent, Trump’s pick to lead counter-terrorism efforts. * Trump to Bukele (president of El Salvador): “Home-growns are next. The home-growns. You gotta build about five more places. It’s not big enough.” 1/

Recently unsealed legal documents in the case of the State of Wisconsin vs. Nikita Casap reveals that the teen instructed his would-be readers of his manifesto to read texts produced by Terrorgram. Also included on his reading list is the manifesto written by Juraj Krajcik- Terrorgram's 1st saint.

For whatever reason this part of the 'kid who killed his parents and wanted to assassinate Trump story' doesn't seem to be getting as much play. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

Genç captures what Turkish artists know too well: when authoritarianism tightens, art doesn’t vanish — it mutates. Censorship turns metaphor into necessity, abstraction into survival. Each brushstroke is quiet refusal, each exhibition a risk. This is resistance when the state hears everything.

As theocratic authoritarianism, as we’ve seen in Turkey advances globally it’s worth looking to Istanbul for resistance, hope and inspiration. The diversity of Istanbul - the true metropol - has always been part of the rich tapestry that makes up it’s beauty.

This beautiful article encapsulates some of the queer experience in Turkey and Istanbul - it’s well worth a read for everyone, but perhaps in particular those who need some hope for queer resistance under theocratic authoritarianism these days. www.artforum.com/columns/kaya...

Nearly a 1,000 student visas invoked by Sec. of State Rubio and counting.

I'm already seeing Right Wing influencers spinning this as "the democrats and leftists are out of control." I have very little faith that this means there will be a focus in people who are *actually* committing violence.

An FBI affidavit in the Nikita Casap case references his manifesto calling for the assassination of Donald Trump to foment a revolution and "save the white race." But they can't call it "racially and ethnically motivated violent extremism anymore. This is textbook political correctness.

yeah, weird that the left wasn’t present at the Fourteen Words conference

i do not think the mainstream press is equipped or capable of covering ideological white nationalists and eugenicists as such, or even capable of noting that this is what they are. it is related to the wide belief that racism is simply a matter of manners.

US price of $1,000 iphone could rise to $2,150, maybe $3,500. Due to supply chain issues, it will take years for it to be produced in the US. People also facing price hikes in everyday things. Trump's turmoils will hit other countries too as supply chains shift.

Ok, enough serious history & politics nerding - why does a sheet of glass that is a mirror seen from one direction but transparent from the other frequently described as a “two way mirror” when it clearly should be a “one way mirror” as it’s only a mirror one way?

Hours ago, @politico.com revealed that DOGE is working with DHS on automating mass deportation efforts — likely explaining why many US citizens, green card holders, and even a Canadian (in Canada) got threatening emails last night terminating “your parole” and telling them to leave the US in 7 days.

So why is this worth remembering? Well, it's worth recalling that this is in the DNA of a nation built on the idea of "Manifest Destiny" and the supreme/god-given right for the wealthy and powerful (and white) to get rid of those they deem undesirable in the nation - what we see now is not new.

Remember when Jefferson said this? "...the cruel massacres they have committed on the women and children of our frontiers taken by surprise, will oblige us now to pursue them to extermination, or drive them to new seats beyond our reach." founders.archives.gov/documents/Je...

“The damage has been done,” said George Saravelos, the head of foreign exchange research at Deutsche Bank. “The market is reassessing the structural attractiveness of the dollar as the world’s global reserve currency and is undergoing a process of rapid de-dollarisation.”

This is not a cost saving thing, rather it is a result of being fed up with consumerism, things made to break and wanting something of high quality, that is repairable and lasts for a long time - I try to implement it across other aspects of life too, but starting at the feet makes sense to me...
