Despite we are away, we try to be present!! Thank you Lauren for representing us there!

Unpopular opinion: sinking a ship and call it an artificial reef is like throwing a 40ft container full of leftover gear in a forest and call it an artificial cave.

The #Bermuda Governor came to @biosstation.bsky.social to learn more about the science we do, and how we serve the Bermuda society and beyond. I had the opportunity to talk to him about my work on #plankton, and my service to the Bermuda government.

Due to children and teaching obligations, we did not go to the NASA PACE meeting in New York - but we send @arizonastateuni.bsky.social grad student Lauren Kittell-Porter to showcase our work! Today is poster session for her - we will join by WhatsApp when needed!

Happy to see a large chunk of my PhD work published today in Cell Host&Microbe: www.cell.com/cell-host-mi... We conducted fluorescence-activated single-cell sorting of active predatory protists in the ocean and recovered symbionts with cool evolutionary positions close to animal pathogens.

the third chapter of my PhD is now published! 🚨 We describe the protist symbiont diversity of the termite species Reticulitermes tibialis. This project was performed in a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) which was super fun 😊 #protistsonsky authors.elsevier.com/a/1kaMa56A9x...

Here we (Lauren) go for the LAST CRUISE of our NSF funded grant on the Rhizaria role in the Sargasso Sea! After 14 months and 16 cruises, this is the last leg for Lauren!! After this, it will be "just" analyzing data and writing a dissertation!! ;)

Hats off to @aslo.org. Proud member here - this is the way. This note, and not hiding/removing DEI resources when it's raining. www.aslo.org/aslo-comment...

Today was MOCNESS day for our (still) NSF funded research on Rhizaria, here @biosstation.bsky.social. Together with @arizonastateuni.bsky.social grad student Lauren Kittell-Porter, we are putting the cod ends in the water under a sunrise in the Sargasso Sea, onboard @whoi.bsky.social RV Armstrong.

Good morning

It is an interesting day to be writing a proposal, but we have to keep working for the best.

Here we go!

You know you are getting old when you get this stateroom assigned. Next three days onboard the RV Armstrong for the last bits of our NSF grant on #rhizaria!

Latest pre-print led by Tim Noyes comparing #eDNA and BRUVs for monitoring #fish biodiversity in a subtropical coral reef. Combining methods added 90 species that use Bermuda's mesophotic coral ecosystem! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... @blancobercial.bsky.social @marianilab.bsky.social

Finished models of Titanic's bitt and pulley, presented next to single frame davit for reference. #indiegame #subROV #Titanic

I would have to be convinced that this is a positive or desirable trait

In my way to explain my students today that there are no diploblast animals (but they should know about it as background), that triplobasty is older than Cnidaria, and Ctenophora are actually the most basal metazoans (and already triploblasts). Porifera, what happened to you?

We are excited to announce the 5th International Workshop on Symbiotic Copepoda (IWOSC) to be held 2-9 August 2025 at the Universiti Sains Malaysia's Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS). Deadline to apply is 15 March 2025. See the attached flyer!

Mesopelagic peeps - having a walk with the kids I found that we had a massive stranding of myctophids in Bermuda. Are there records around of such events? They where everywhere. It is windy around, but nothing to think about massive killing of mesopelagic fish when when migrating

And, this is finally our turn! We have started our #NASAPACE validation in collaboration with the BATS team! We will measure pigments in the water (HPLC) and the size distribution and fluorescence of phytoplankton and particles in the photic layer. One month done, three years to go!

Next Monday 13 we have the 6th session of The Life of Retaria Seminar Series! Join us at 08h00 (CET) and discover symbiosis in these wonderful protists with Caroline Juery and @filiphusnik.bsky.social Check it out: thelifeofretaria.github.io #radiolaria #foraminifera #theLifeOfRetaria #protistsonsky

We had planned to go back home today, flying from Baltimore to Bermuda... But the weather decided to give us an extra day! Flight postponed, working in the hotel, children with videogames, eating nearby (roads have not been ploughed)... Life is good.

Time to edit again my invertebrate diversity and evolution lectures... The oldest ecdysozoa? www.cell.com/current-biol...

Bumped into this Radiolarian art at Peg's Gallery in Hudson OH! Apart from being the focus of our #NSFfunded research, these beautifully fragile organisms keep inspiring artists (like www.instagram.com/lisademagall/) all over the world

Not keen of posting my kids here but. Happiness is...

One of my favorite radiolarians. I call it a "little hat", but I guess it is probably Eucecryphalus sp. Here are two examples from Bermuda (Atlantic) and Puerto Rico (Caribbean). Exquisite little #protistsonsky. I love seeing these forms in different regions of the Oceans. #protistaday #marinelife

Ah, Ohio - always giving us White Christmas
