Here’s a hot take: Democrats are worth less than their weight in digital fundraising pleas

Was it in doubt?

I appreciate the idea. But the means are too limited. What people don't buy on Friday, they buy on Saturday. The bottom line doesn't change. Log off social media platforms owned by Meta, Google, M*sk, Bezos (Goodreads!), they can never get that share of our attention back.

The economic blackout should include use of social media platforms owned by Meta, Google, M*sk, Bezos (Goodreads!), and other oligarchs. Using the platforms generates value for them. Show me a nation willing to log off big capitalist platforms for one day and I'd have some hope

I have spent a lot of time since 2016 arguing with people about whether I was too worried and whether experts like me were exaggerating the threat. I never said authoritarianism was a certainty, but I always said the risk was unacceptably high. And.... <gestures wildly>

#dearcolleague, if I *were* able to "indoctrinate" my students, they would all write paragraphs that start with topic sentences and put the period after the citation in the MLA style.

Dear colleagues, welcome to the Inquisition

Charming that Nancy thinks there’ll be a next election. Or maybe she doesn’t—but the fundraising must go on

Fascism flourishes in conditions of panic, confusion, chaos, and disorder. Stay alert, but stay calm, stay focused, stay connected. Build OFFLINE connections and take OFFLINE actions.

Witnessing this attack on the Universities, I keep thinking about the destruction of the monasteries in the Reformation -- the "reformers" claimed they were expropriating the Vatican for the people, but in truth, they were expropriating the people for the landed aristocracy.

Prediction: Dems will approach this as a legal problem and use it as a fundraising opportunity rather than a political problem requiring a political strategy. TL/DR: Democrats lose.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but spewing predictable outrage and panic on social media is not political action. Stay calm, stay focused, and do things that matter. (These will be mostly offline.)

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

I occasionally wander around Palm Springs and—this is strange—I've noticed striking similarities between their mailboxes and Katy Perry fashion choices. Let me know if you see it too. 🧵

Driving through the Central Valley of California yesterday, the highways were deserted. I wondered whether our undocumented friends were mostly staying home.

One of the best things you can do right now is read books. Buy them. Borrow them from the library. Gift them. Read history. Read fiction. Read science writing. Read anything that shows you the world is bigger than what fascists say it is. Read to remember why your resistance matters. 📚💙

“We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist” James Baldwin

I never thought Reddit, Teen Vogue and Rolling Stone would be the face of the resistance but here we are

"Unimportant fights are disagreements like those that center the famous and influencers as representatives.... These conflicts become inundated with pitfalls of disempowering political representation."

Stories about news sites (like WaPo) deleting and revising their archives to please the Angry Orange Piglet and social media platforms and search engines suggesting users follow the Piglet's henchpersons while burying opposition voices are the most 1984 things we've seen yet.

Vaclav Havel: The kind of hope I often think about (especially in situations that are particularly hopeless, such as prison) I understand above all as a state of mind, not a state of the world.

Cephalus himself couldn’t have said it better

MAGA takeover of social media. It’s only a matter of time before the work people are putting into building networks on this platform is sold to the next autocratic billionaire.

Giving idiots your attention and amplifying their voices to hype up everyone’s anxiety…doesn’t help

The biggest issue we have today is a dearth of epistemic responsibility. Forming good beliefs takes a lot of curiosity and effort and very few people seem to want to put in the effort to do any basic digging or reflecting on thing

Seems I'm learning more when I'm offline.
