If you're trying to figure out what to do right now, my advice is to just pick a thing that you think might be useful in some way, however small, and do it. Doing a thing leads you to doing another, bigger thing, and prepares you for that next thing.

Back on my hobby horse: Don’t use the phrase “taxpayer dollars” to make claims upon collective resources. Not only does it reproduce facile ideas about gov finance, it also reifies the reactionary notion that the taxpayer is the proper subject of the state. The word you’re looking for is “public”.
