initial reports made this sound like a minor failed attempt

In this post, I commend universities that filed amicus brief in AAUP case challenging speech-based deportations of foreign students, but also explain why this isn't adequate substitute for universities bringing a case of their own: reason.com/volokh/2025/...

"What we are seeing is a purge—of the administrative state, of the universities, of expertise—that is consistent with events like the Cultural Revolution in China in the 1960s and ’70s, or the dismantling of the tsarist civil service after the Bolshevik Revolution" www.thenation.com/article/soci...

They definitely voted for this

THE RISE OF END TIMES FASCISM My first major piece of the new Trump era, co-written with @astra.bsky.social. The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

Exodus is a story about an anti-immigrant king who thought he was the gods’ representative on Earth.

They’re using the hostages to try and justify their anti-democratic movement. Not in our name

Chag sameach.

You know who else we’re thinking about? People who have had their visas suddenly revoked, or who have been surreptitiously marched into a Salvadoran prison, without a shred of due process.

Let’s send food safety inspectors to the coal mines’

Embarrassed to say I did not join AAUP until this year. But if you are a faculty and staff member, they are representing your interests.

I have zero patience for “do climate work but just don’t call it that”. I am not talking in code about an existential threat bc a handful of Americans like profiting off oil and gas & have managed to brainwashed another handful of Americans. Don’t capitulate. They’ll take your funding anyway.

Florida is setting up to be a fully fascist state. State universities have 287g agreements as do regulatory agencies like fish and wildlife. (Plus a new state law to criminalize “being an immigrant in Florida”)

US students. Looking to apply to graduate school? Had an offer rescinded recently? The University of British Columbia in Canada will re-open the application portal in some departments for US students from April 14-18. Details: www.grad.ubc.ca/us-applicant... #ubc #AcademicSky #PhDSky #ScienceSky

Heartbreaking & terrifying portrait of a Russian scientist trapped in limbo in our new autocracy, beautifully reported by @ellenbarry.bsky.social

Yet again, USA: Require that your members of Congress act to stop all of this; to hold Elon Musk personally accountable; and to #ImpeachTrump.

Per a source, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who has required that he approve all contracts over certain thresholds personally, has over 5000 review requests on his desk. Apparently he approves around 15/day.

The NIH thing took a lot of academics who weren’t paying attention by surprise. Hopefully at this point it’s clear that using budgetary power to turn our world-leading universities into third-rate, autocracy-compliant institutions is the point.

BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency. Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

The Trump administration plans to eliminate the research arm of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, close all weather and climate labs and eviscerate its budget along with several other NOAA offices, according to internal documents obtained by CNN.

"I really think we all need to be speaking up right now. . . . I think this would be so much stronger if many more of my fellow presidents were speaking up." - Chris Eisgruber www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/p...?

Another garbage, unconstitutional executive order from the President. Now he claims that states can't set their own environmental laws, like California's carbon trading program, which by the way, has existed since... 2006. www.latimes.com/environment/...

Apparently, despite the confusingly written press release, this is not the whole of the cooperative agreement being cancelled. The release is apparently correct in referring to $4M, though the cooperative agreement is about 4-5x per year larger.

Does it say IDEAS???

The lesson for universities is you may as well fight back. You'll lose the money either way. The only question is whether you keep your dignity.

Oh, I guess we are just repealing regulations without notice and comment now?

Just to recap: Multiple sieg heils at the inauguration and CPAC SecDef with “88” and Jerusalem Cross tattoos Health Sec said “COVID was engineered to spare the Jews” and met with literal German Nazis FBI Director appeared 6x on a podcast that advocates for a “final solution” for America’s Jews

@science.org confirms that yesterday the Trump admin wiped out the technical staff of the U.S. National Climate Assessment and the Global Change Research Program. When USGCRP's acting director, who is on a time-limited contract, leaves, it will leave the congressionally mandated office empty.

Raskin: The basis for this most destructive trade war in the history of the world is the profound economic research and policy writings of one Ron Vera, a completely fictional economist conjured up by Peter Navarro, a real person who Elon Musk just called a moron

Our funding model, in which students are dependent upon PIs to bring in their salaries, is broken and was called out in a 2018 Academies report on sexual harassment in academia. This is a big move in wrong direction.

Update! The senate at Indiana U-Bloomington has passed an identical resolution to the Rutgers Senate's calling for a Big Ten defense compact!! And the Rutgers Senate is meeting tomorrow in a special emergency session to plan next steps. Read their open letter to President Jonathan Holloway below.

Incredible. Ending the cooperative agreement between Princeton and the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab because it studies climate change. This is decades of fundamental climate, meteorology, oceanography science, from which we all benefit today - recognized in the Nobel Prize to Suki Manabe.

One of the GOP candidates for NJ governor: “My legislative friends don’t like this, but I’m going to ignore the legislature for the first 100 days. I’m going to ignore the courts for the first 100 days, and we’re going to lead the state by executive order.”

The National Science Foundation slashed the number of graduate research fellowships awarded each year to the most promising young researchers in half. This is how we make America great? By defunding support for our best and brightest young minds? This is pure idiocy www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Today's US EO orders the Attorney General to identify + take expeditious action to stop enforcement of "all State & local laws... purporting to address “climate change” or involving “environmental, social, and governance” initiatives, “environmental justice,” carbon or “greenhouse gas” emissions."
