New book review: Governed by Affect: Hot Cognition and the End of Cold War Psychology, by Michael Pettit. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

If it were at all unclear that Trump is in Putin's pocket, surely now it is strikingly clear. Europe, Canada, RoW, need to re-align, pronto.

New on the HEX Handbook: Tiffany Watt Smith, "On Silence". sites.tuni.fi/hexhandbook/...

I know this article is 4 years old, but I can still see no reason to doubt its content. Trump sings what Putin composes. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021...

Never has the name "Bad Enoch" seemed more appropriate. Rivers of bilge.

tearing up my axis of evil bingo card

US is fully rogue. Europe, UK, Canada and others should accord it pariah status.

for all the heinous things this US regime will do, I suspect it will be remembered longest for the numerous ways it went about killing children

Age 6, the whole class was asked to name types of squirrel. 25 kids. After red, grey and flying the class was floundering. I said black. Teacher told me I was ridiculous. I said I'd seen one. Was punished for answering back. The injustice lives with me, more than 40 years later.

From the CBC. I should point out that you don't steal eggs; you poach them.

Explanation for the scraped website was that they copied the website template and accidentally left in the data (still don't know how that could have led to misspelled name and removed DOIs) but I have deleted original post since they are acting in good faith to take the pages down.

Everything is fucked.

cancelled my trip to Dallas. I do not think one can safely speak freely in the US and I see no reason to make myself a target. Also, #TeamCanada. Thanks to those who previously replied to my query about travelling to the US.

cobalt-60 and potash come to mind. Um, smoked meat kicks pastrami's ass. Also hockey players.

this is astonishing in every way www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Best deal, ever. 😆

In the Guardian just now: "Markets are retreating sharply today because investors had not expected a robust response from the countries hit by new US tariffs." Really? That seems totally absurd to me. Markets are tanking because that was the plan!

There is doubtless a small group of people making a fortune from shorting the markets. Global misery is the price for the enrichment of a criminal gang.

Here's the speech if you haven't heard it. 13 minutes of your time. Share it with your American friends and neighbours, because they won't see it otherwise. Circulate it in Mexico and Denmark, France and the UK, Panama and Germany, Poland and Estonia, and especially -- especially -- Ukraine.

the vernissage for this was 8 years ago. Safe to say that if we did it again we would leave the dates open-ended.

canvassing opinion: are academics cancelling planned professional trips to the US?

Incredibly moving Justin Trudeau remarks: "We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people....Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us."

to add: "More than 70 per cent of the world’s supply of cobalt-60 is produced at Canadian nuclear power plants. Canada refines more than 90 per cent of the cobalt-60 market globally. About 60 per cent of the world’s market of iodine-125 is produced at the McMaster Nuclear Reactor" (CNA)

authors, post the first line of your book: "You are not a machine in any ordinary sense." [entirely subject to change, the line and the machine]
