The Hitler song is getting endless play on the jukebox at the Nazi bar? Shocking.

Rather than cowering or complying, foundations are coming together with the leadership of @macfound.org's @palfrey.org to protect the rights of all, as responsible institutions must. Gift link: America’s Richest Foundations Team Up Against Feared Trump Assault www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

OK, some asks. Reach out via Signal or email, depending on comfort/what’s appropriate — both are in my bio. DOJ sources: If you can let me know of DRP2 fallout in your area, let me know. Also: If you have been affected by arts or science funding cuts and are willing to talk, please reach out.

As a follow-up to the Kaiser interview, here is my exchange with Dr. Bhattacharya starting Sunday evening... 1/n

As I type this, I have National Bureau of Labor Statistics data on my screen to justify labor demand for a new graduate program. They have lost at least 20% of their workforce.

'The poll found that on a weekly basis more than 90% of ppl use weather forecasts, job market reports, food safety warnings & other information based on federal science. But only 10% of respondents are concerned that cuts to federal support for science might impact their access to such information'

I renewed my passport online with standard processing. It shipped in exactly 7 days. At least one thing is functioning in the federal gov and don't pay for expedited processing.

I really don't have any words about this story. It's just so deeply upsetting. Fuck the women who decided to police the bathroom and fuck the guard for doing this.

Testing out DeepSeek-R1's ability to do "science" in one-shot. I asked it to critique my 2017 R01 proposal (Impact 26, 10%, funded by NINDS. I wrote the proposal, have rights to share it. It's first-shot response is indistinguishable from a median quality reviewer's. What do we do now?

I think DeepSeek needs to participate in the early career reviewer program at the NIH.

It's Teacher Appreciation Week. Here's how to appreciate teachers: pay them better.

The NIH move to restrict animal research is a bad one and not just about health - it's about national security. More here: medium.com/@eblissmorea...

This is a crazy quote: "and some U.S. Catholics critical of Francis for his emphasis on mercy" (gift link) wapo.st/42UJlmV

This graph is fascinating. From: www.reddit.com/r/NIH/s/Pao5...

So uhh Murkowski is speaking at UAA commencement and she's not mincing words 👀

Really hard to say what the worst part of this NEA grant termination letter is (sent at 10pm on a Friday!) but I think it's finding out the federal government's priority for arts funds is now "fostering AI competency" rather than funding literature.

NIH adds about 100 billion/yr to the economy

Budget released today: 40% cut to NIH 50% cut to NSF If enacted, this will destroy academic research in the United States. It will also have a major trickle down effect on the entire academic ecosystem

My trainee's F31 diversity from NIDDK "terminated" today. We received a NGA for $0.00. He worked his butt off for it and would have been competitive in the normal F31 pool. This is just blatant discrimination. If there are large lawsuits being put together, please share that info. #contractlaw

Just to be clear, this is a violation of the fundamental ethical principle in clinical trial design called "equipoise." Equipoise means that no-one is exposed to excess risk just to test the therapy. That's specifically *why* vaccine trials don't use placebo arms. Ethical violation as POLICY.

The first crime is that all of this wildly illegal & unconstitutional & requires immediate impeachment & removal. The second crime is that we, the richest country in world history, only spend $9 billion in a $1.7 <trillion> budget on the NSF. But that’s a discussion for once we stop the fascism.

Welp, it begins. Sigma Aldrich.

Science is squeezed from both ends. Grant funding is being withheld, and at the same time our operating expenses are increasing dramatically because of tariffs.

My quote of the day It takes years to realize the multiple benefits of science; without adequate, sustained funding for research, the careers of many bright, young scientists may come to a screeching halt. Carol Greider

Time to catch up on the past week’s news about science and medicine in the US. Whew. 1/10

Want to see a lot of happy dogs sleeping? This is the 🧵for you!😍 #timelinecleanse

Dear god let this man cook.

NEW: We (mostly @noamross.net) launched a website to shine a brighter light on terminated NIH and NSF grants. grant-watch.us It links to our NIH & NSF trackers, grant info submission forms, and other info. We'll also add new analyses soon. Check it out and let us know what else you'd like to see.

NEW: Per multiple sources, the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Advisors has been entirely disbanded.
