Feel free to fact-check me on this, but I believe it was 74 degrees out in Chicago when Obama won.

Michael, I love you, you are a delight. You have taught me so much over the last few years and your charming voice got me through some isolated times (do not listen to these insufferable-sounding people). But now the reddit algorithm is going to keep putting this awful-looking sub in my feed!

Sounds like they still have to "earn" the money after "winning" because it's a salary and not a prize? I get that they picked folks that will willingly go along with whatever, but what if I just entered to get the million bucks, not promote this idiotic PAC?

The Chicago Tribune endorsed him. I remember because that's the last day I ever subscribed.

The Trevor Noah podcast episode with him was fantastic

Haha, I was wondering why the new Cure album came out yesterday and not a Tuesday. I am old and obviously haven’t been paying enough attention to new albums for a decade.

My husband went as a 17 year old shithead (or so he tells me) and most of his classmates were quite a bit older. He liked learning from them and they were more motivated than the younger folk. Do it!

If only we had enough data to be sure it's safe, like BILLIONS of people having taken the vaccine.

What countries will take us? How will all of these people obtain visas to work/not be deported? Do we think that American turning full fascist won't have an echo in other countries? Will we as immigrants be treated fairly? As someone who has lived abroad a few times, it's not that simple.

It took 35 (adult) years, but it finally happened for me last night. Four kids total, my new building is the most organized I’ve ever lived in. It can still happen for you!

Wow! That would be twice as much as any medical bill I had in four years in Japan (and I had some tests that would cost at least $1000 with good insurance in the US). I can see this scaring people off. Take care.

My very offline 80-something mom asked me about it this morning, terrified (she is already voting Harris and lives in a blue state). So word must be getting out.

I did this to send a message. I'm just hoping the timing is communication enough?

I think you do a nice job of laying out why some moms may have ambivalence about childless women. It's something I've dealt with over the years, swallowing some hurtful comments (as you did--yikes) because maybe it comes from their own frustrations. Great piece overall too.

The ESPN story I saw floating around reported that these jerks said they were told they were allowed back in but at least in that piece the Yankees did not comment. I'm still with you in hating the Yankees.

I mean, I already canceled my subscription when they endorsed Gary Johnson.

And you ask anyone who supports these salaries WHY and they will say that you can't attract good people for less than that. And yet they are never good people (even in terms of competence) and we are all doing worse jobs for less.
comment in response to

Have the Yankees or MLB confirmed that these jerks are allowed back in? I'm hopeful that the only source for this is the jerks themselves saying it, but I am also very naive.

Good point, and security might have said it just to de-escalate the situation.

I just got back from a wonderful trip to Santa Fe and Taos and there were soooooo many Harris/Walz signs and exactly zero Trump ones. Maybe they are too small to make a difference statewide (I have no idea), but it was so nice to see.

I keep thinking about this. People I have no good thoughts about have put their literal lives on the line (you know things will not go well for them if he wins) while these billionaires are cowering?

Knew a lady from Florida who refused to vote because her vote did not matter. She absolutely would have voted Gore, too. (to be clear, I did not like her)

In many restrooms in Japan there is a little button you can push to play music or water sounds to cover up your misdeeds. I always felt it was calling attention to them.

We just watched The Bullet Train (an inspiration for Speed) and it was amazing how the trains look as cool now as they did in 1975.

I only order with the lowest of expectations but have been more or less satisfied a few times in the last year. It must really depend on the seller.

This was wonderful on many levels. In a moment when I am really missing Tokyo I particularly enjoyed it. Side note—I hope Lee Chapman joins Bluesky!

Yep, and so many jobs are in the suburbs. I'm lucky enough to work downtown and have never needed a car, but having a job in the burbs usually means driving, and the traffic is some of the worst in the country.

I thought it was strange! But it was 2020, after all. Everything was strange. They often closed the road in front of it, which seemed to me more aggressive than the security at some other embassies.

The only time in four years living in Tokyo I was stopped by police was trying to drop my ballot off at the embassy (I'd read conflicting things online). Didn't make it to the sidewalk of my own embassy without this guy screaming at me. Walked a few blocks to a post office to mail it to them.

First of all, it looks beautiful in that setting. Second of all, we had a purple house in our town and it was the most handy landmark you can think of (turn right at the purple house, etc).

One of the saddest book excerpts I’ve ever read (could not bring myself to read the whole book) was by someone who grew up in a family of 14. These types give so little thought about what they are doing to their kids.

As someone slightly older than him with many friends his age and older, he's at best average for his age in terms of youthiness?
