Freedom isn't free www.thedriftmag.com/donate/

This is a profound attack on academic freedom, full stop

I'm partial to "Rowte-owte". What about everyone else?

My latest with @sciam.bsky.social "Politics, Not Biology, Is Driving Legal Efforts to Classify Sex". Please do read the linked Executive Orders and HS statements that this piece is in response to. I am hoping of a better dialogue on this... www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-...

One of the reasons it is essential to teach STS and the history of science is that students learn early why these statements are so fundamentally wrong and incoherent

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

REVEALED: we identified the operator of an overtly racist X account, "GlomarResponder," as ICE Assistant Chief Counsel James Rodden, based on an overwhelming number of biographical details matched through publicly available documents, other social media activity, and courtroom observation.

Want to go visit the national parks this year? Sorry. The reservation system is shut down, EMT personnel are gone, so don't get hurt or lost. No one can clean the bathrooms or cabins, so they'll be closed. Rangers are fired. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

Destroying public goods is much easier to think about in terms of concrete examples than abstracted process questions. The example of hollowing out of public education in @rachelmcohen.bsky.social's piece is exactly how to make sense of DOGE www.vox.com/donald-trump...

Obvious implications for the AI push in higher ed

I get easily irritated reading stories about animal communication; they often portray communication simplistically and have little sense for the animals. But this story is great. Best I’ve read in a long while.

The majority of public research universities DO NOT have giant endowments. "Overhead" from grants is key in supporting the substantive research infrastructures that enable them to be top institutions. This move is an attempt to beat down and control public universities.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

It really can’t be overstated how much the Trump admin could cause generational brain drain from the US. European unis could easily hire away leading scientists across fields right now arstechnica.com/science/2025...

Big news, #histmed! We're thrilled to announce the shortlist for the William H. Welch Medal, awarded to the author of a book of outstanding merit in the history of medicine. For the first time, the AAHM is announcing the shortlist for this award in advance of the awards ceremony! 🧵

For some nice news, what archaeologists are able to do with lidar is really remarkable www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

These heartbreaking notes get so directly at how fundamentally inhumane America’s homeless policy is

NEW: @wired.com built a tool to monitor 1,300+ federal .gov websites, revealing that entire sites are going dark as we speak. @telliotter.bsky.social, @dmehro.bsky.social (who built the tool), and @dell.bsky.social report: www.wired.com/story/us-gov...

We have built a state that relies on nonprofits and industry to do its basic tasks. Pausing funding breaks in this framework breaks the current us social safety net. Though the legality of this directive is quite suspect, it goes WAY beyond research.

Shutting down medical research — not just within NIH, but everywhere that’s funded by NIH — will have long-term effects on medicine & short-term effects on state, higher education & hospital budgets. This affects all of us, not just researchers.

Very disappointing

Today's the day! I poured everything I've got into this book, and now, eight years after I started working on it, it is officially published! I'm so grateful for everyone who helped make this book a reality - and to all of my readers for their support.

Every six months, there’s a new “3M knew X was toxic and covered it up” story

Hello, so, I'm an anthropologist who has studied wildfires for over a decade and, just recently, handed in a book manuscript for peer review on the pathologies of wildfire management in Australia and, to a lesser extent, Canada and the US. It's called "How to Control Fire" (TBC).

A beautiful, smart, cleverly curated new thing: the @pdimagearchive.bsky.social! Spending the weekend exploring thousands upon thousands of historic images, thinking about how to teach with them + use them in my research.

More and more people are saying “Use the discount code UCPNEW to get 30% off your preorder copy of Lab Dog by Brad Bolman” @uchicagopress.bsky.social to learn about a forgotten scheme to breed perfect Irish terriers and a lot more press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...

I’m furious I never considered becoming a cacio e pepe scientist

Taxes are simply not high enough

We are the wealthiest nation on earth. There is no rational reason as to why we are not the healthiest nation on earth. If we’re going to reform our broken and dysfunctional health care system and “Make America Healthy Again,” this is some of what we must do. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This level of wealth concentration is indefensible

There's a lot of discussion once again about canine blood banks, so I thought I'd reshare a Cabinet piece I wrote years back that holds up pretty well www.cabinetmagazine.org/issues/67/bo...

Happy for her, but once again tapping the sign: www.growbyginkgo.com/2023/02/16/f...

Fantastic piece that caused me to reconsider most streaming I still pay for www.nplusonemag.com/issue-49/ess...

NEW: After reviewing leaked documents, we have found UnitedHealth is strategically limiting access to a treatment for thousands of children with autism across the country in order to cut costs. Advocates say the company’s strategy may be illegal. www.propublica.org/article/unit... 👇

The new episode of Tides of History is out today! It was truly a pleasure speaking with @patrickwyman.bsky.social about the Iron Age Mediterranean - everything from Carthage and the Phoenicians to the rise of Rome. wondery.com/shows/tides-...

I assumed the Murdoch family had thoughts on Succession but even Baudrillard might’ve been surprised at all this

"As local news is steadily strangled to death by the Facebook/Google advertising duopoly, the resulting gap is being filled with right-wing propaganda and reactionary voices on social media, who flood the information space with hysterical lies about national culture-war topics"
