I kept my gaze on the Starchy Foods!!! sign, which had little dancing figures around it which I guess were supposed to be starchy foods.

Random game Saturday: the randomizer says X, which limits the pool significantly! But, remember the most important thing… Money and shops are back! (My primary memories of this game are finishing it at ~2 AM, and this hilarious bit of box copy.)

Book number 2: “Koji Kondo’s Super Mario Bros. Soundtrack”, part of Bloomsbury’s series that mostly covers full length albums. This deconstruction of a 3-4 minute soundtrack gets into the nitty gritty of NES sound design, Kondo’s history, and digs a little into Mario World as well.

Random video game Saturday: randomizer says K, and this is the first one I found on the shelf. Wife picked this one up in our “find all the grid based strategy games we can” phase. I ended up playing it much later. Interesting setup; I tried playing chronologically instead of focusing one character.

With that in mind, I finished my first book of the year last night: “Trail of the Firewriter” by R.J. Haig. Found it at the Indian River, MI library book sale while we were on vacation. In brief: A retired firefighter in his mid-70s lost his wife, went on a long road trip, and wrote about it.

For the last few years, I’ve made lists of the video games I’d like to get through by the end of the year; this year I also did so for books. I’ve had a few pickups that have languished, and I should do something about that.

Kirby Triple Deluxe #rollcredits.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 #rollcredits. Man, moving this to component input on the older TV made a world of difference. It’s a step behind the first Galaxy IMO but was well worth giving it a run. The remix stage from Mario 64 was particularly fun (and I don’t even like SM64 that much).

The randomizer for Random Game Saturday gave me Y, so here’s one of the more unique pieces I have. When Ys VI came out in the US, publisher Konami ran a boss rush contest; I placed high enough to win this 🇯🇵 collector edition, with the game swapped out for a US version signed by the Konami producer.

It’s time for my end of year video game post! I didn’t complete a single game between June 1 and September 1 for Reasons, so it’s not as robust as years past. But I still have some nonsense to say.

Random Game Saturday. Picked this up in my “play all the TRPGs on the PS1” era. Went through a phase of trying to decode the battle mechanics, but lost motivation because the game isn’t *that* good. Never played the DS rerelease with the inexplicably awful redesigns of the female characters.

That’s twice now that Mufasa has been murdered by a bunch of running animals
