The Seventh Bride by T Kingfisher, read by Kaylin Heath 💙📚 Inversion of the Bluebeard tale which mixes magic, humour and feminism to wonderful effect. Highly enjoyable story.

A Victim Must Be Found & The Ransom Game by Howard Engel 💙📚 Benny Cooperman is a mild-mannered, self-deprecating private investigator with a stubborn streak that keeps him on the job even after his client is murdered...wry, smartly written mysteries that are well worth reading though sadly OP.

Just a reminder, in case you need it.

Not To Be Taken by Anthony Berkeley 💙📚 An intriguing mystery with clues scattered like breadcrumbs & a taut finale. Arsenic, a circle of friends in rural England, the looming threat of Nazi-ism, the difficulty of knowing anyone, no matter how close - it all adds to the tense, nervy atmosphere.

Bit of a catch-up this - read these titles this January 💙📚 Murder in Vienna by E C R Lorac Dramatic Murder by Elizabeth Anthony Can't You Sleep, Little Bear by Barbara Firth & Martin Waddell Shadows Before by Dorothy Bowers A Deed Without a Name by Dorothy Bowers ⭐️Bowers is brilliant!⭐️

I have been so excited since I found out this would be announced today! RIP any ability for me to concentrate: www.apple.com/tv-pr/news/2...

I was a bit taken aback to read CAMRA's assessment of my latest What's Brewing column, but obviously delighted. I hope you read it & it makes you feel uncomfortable. Please consider why it makes you feel uneasy while drinking the @ladiesofdarkness.bsky.social beers. wb.camra.org.uk/2025/02/03/t...

The new Emily Henry book is the perfect book to take you away from it all. #currentlyreading 💙📚

NEW: Last week’s newsletter had ‘IT’S A COUP’ in big red letters on front page of NYT. Well, guess what? It still is. We have to stop framing what’s happening as in any way normal. It’s a coup & a collapse in the international order & none of this is ‘normal’ broligarchy.substack.com/p/us-coup-ga...

Sound advice here, though obviously the timeline is off

It's not a demolition site it's a mass grave. It's not a demolition site it's a crime scene. It's not a demolition site its a homeland. It's not a demolition site it's Palestine. It's not a demolition site it's a genocide.

It's perfectly acceptable to protest at hospitals and system administration offices if you want to send a message to healthcare administrators about complying with fascism in advance!

One of the words on this list is “historically”.

Well done for making it to the end of January. Stop whatever you're doing and read a book to reward yourself. If you don't have a book, then buy one from an indie bookshop, that way you'll be making TWO people happy.

I like reading books my friends wrote because they sound just like them 😍

If you’re looking at what’s happening in the US, seeing Musk considering making massive donations to Reform & trying to subvert our democracy, and are rightly horrified, might I recommend signing this - petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

We're mourning the death of Bilal Okal, our ninth @msf.org colleague killed in Gaza by Israeli forces. He was killed in December 2024, along with 10 members of his family, when an airstrike hit their home. My thoughts are with Bilal's family and friends.

Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?" So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?
