Reminder that Danny Healy-Rae is worth €4m, and his brother is worth €6m, they are in politics purely for themselves and, and have no policies that offer hope to anyone.

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

I celebrate the 80% of Germans who did not vote for the far right. Do not make 19.6% of German voters into "the" German people (again). "The" German people don't exist! The German population is diverse and divided, but voted overwhelmingly for liberal democratic parties. #BTW25 #GermanElection

He shouldn’t have too

Isn't that supposed to be the bit you *don't* say out loud?

Today (Feb 22) in 1943, three courageous young people in the group White Rose were executed for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets in Germany. Sophie Scholl: "The greatest damage is caused by the silent majority that just wants to survive, submit and go along with everything."

"See you in court." A more meaningful, more powerful constitutional maxim than "We are the federal law".

Not to go all socialist on you, but in Ireland, if you’re diagnosed with diabetes, you qualify for the Long-Term Illness scheme and your insulin is FREE, along with any other medicines associated with your condition.

Delicious

People criticising the Trump Administration for stupidity are missing something. They are geniuses in cruelty.

A cost-of-living crisis isn't the easiest time to sell art, but: www.ciaraioch.com is where you can support my work, with each archival-quality print on textured heavy paper being produced here in Ireland, shipping internationally in eco-friendly packaging, with free mini-treats in every order 🎁

Never let them tell you that Irishness is some set, immutable fact of the blood

It's weird how everyone in the world knows a Nazi salute when we see it, with the notable exception of journalists and their editors.

I see Stephen Collins now has his finger of the pulse of world opinion, which apparently is consistently and deeply troubled by Irish neutrality.

This is digital humanities

"But how is AI learning from a book any different from a person learning from it?" Because people are people and computers are not people and if you are not sure of the difference then you possibly should not be allowed to go to PC World unaccompanied.

The thing is, all of this is just the logical endpoint of capitalism. This is the trajectory we've BEEN on. You allow people to hoard that much wealth, you allow them to purchase that much power, this is where you end up. This was always where it was going to end up. There is no other outcome.

Zelenskyy has become one of the world’s greatest heroes. — That’s eating Trump alive.

COVID was an opportunity to adapt & be a more inclusive society. We could have learned about airborne spread & adopted clean air standards. Improved ventilation. Made more outdoor spaces. Normalized masking. Instead we’ve politicized infection control & made society less safe for everyone

The most unpatriotic members of any society are the far right. They will always align with foreign interests against the interests of their own nations. They will always undermine national institutions and national values in pursuit of their own interests. When they pose as patriots, they lie.

Reassuring to see people power, unions coming together, on the streets across the 50 States #50501protests

"Wenn Putin Zeit gewinnt, dann arbeitet sie für ihn. Die Trump-Administration hat anfangs geglaubt, Russland unter Druck setzen zu müssen...Doch nun sieht Putin, dass Trump sich bereits auf ihn zubewegt – das bestätigt ihn in seiner Strategie." www.fr.de/politik/carl...

As a political scientist who studies countries that managed to stop the slide into authoritarianism, I can assure you that ***refraining from provoking the authoritarian*** is not how it works. Without further ado, I will now go tear out another chunk of hair.

I’m in Munich and people keep asking me to decode Vance’s speech. OK: In Vance English “free speech” means “Let Musk run your elections” and “democracy” means “let Russia run your elections.” Now move on. 2025 is about what Europeans do, not what Americans say.

Finger crossed there’s no invite- no bending the knee, with the auld bowl of shamrock in hand, to that crazed racist, virulent transphobe & raging misogynist in the White House … nor should he give one to Trump!

Once again I am leaving the Munich Security Conference in a low mood. Amongst all the noise, the US signalled their plans for Europe, so things are becoming clearer. But things are clearly not good. This is what we now know, and what we have to do about it:🧵1/17

I wrote this on the most consistently terrible, and fatal, idea in centrist politics today. On Fanta, rebadging, and why attempting to win votes from fascists is morally disgusting and politically suicidal. www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle-co...

Images from the #TeslaTakeDown protest in Manhattan, one of close to 50 such events taking place across the country. Protesters are chanting "Stop the Coup" and "Boycott Tesla."

Ireland’s Arts Council has been taking flak this week because of the VERY costly failure of its new IT project. I’ve been critical of the existing system for years. But it’s still worth remembering how much they do to support the arts. I wrote about applying here: oisinmcgann.com/if-you-dont-...

I’ll shut up about this in a minute as I have leaves to sweep but: one thing that is maddening about this framing is the implication that it’s a bad thing for a state body in charge of disbursing millions lto pay the going rate to the best experts to assist with something as complicated as IT

It has been a tough week, this week. But there was one silver lining or three. I received a package from @ciaraioch.bsky.social with some prints I ordered. Forgive the crappy photography, Ciara - not my strong point. But the prints are fabulous! 😍

I totally agree with Matthew on this in terms of the current government trying to lay blame. And lazy reporting from the IT also.

NEW Can a government choose which court orders to comply with? A recent UK Supreme Court judgment provides an emphatic answer to this now topical question By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...
