Nice video from INCC on 10 years of water vole discovery in the Glamorgan uplands including on several peatland restoration sites. The water vole response to our restoration works at Castell Nos was a key success for us and excited to see what Rob and team learn in the next 10 years

Great to see peatlands featuring here.

🚨 #PeatECR don’t miss your chance to apply for the 2025 #PeatNeeds microgrants! 🗓️ Just over a week left to apply for funding in March. Send us your wish list, before you head off into the field! 🐸🕷️🌱💦🫧 ℹ️ More info on requirements and conditions here: docs.google.com/forms/d/1O6J...

Visit south Wales. It always looks like this, I promise.

First day of real sun in a while so took some time to go and wander round Gower. Managed to get to Pennard Castle and Whiteford Lighthouse for some photos. New lens and new film in the camera so will be interesting to see how they come out and compare to these I took on my phone

Strange things afoot in Cwmparc. An insightful write up of the protest and recent events from @ebenmyrddin.bsky.social It’s really sad to see the loss of this access. This was my after school escape route to the hills back in the mid 1990’s. And before that my father’s playground

Really pleased with the number of sites I have in the Tracking the Colour of #Peatlands project so far. In our first year I received >2000 photographs from members of the public 2 more will be going up in Germany soon and 1 being sent to @unpeatable.bsky.social too! #PeatColours

Bleak news from Cardiff, more anxiety inducing having got the all staff invite to Swansea’s ‘financial sustainability’ zoom. I’m on our senate as PGR rep, sometimes feels like the whole sector’s crumbling around you. Too many talented friends and colleagues losing jobs and something needs to change.

Normally these ditches on the Rhigos are empty but huge amounts of peaty water leaving all the bog restoration sites as I was out collecting TOC samples today. Something tells me the readings for today might be a bit higher than the previous ones

If anyone from former #PeatTwitter or in the peatlands feed runs a TOC-L and autosampler, and has had issues with this specific overflow/drain outlet backing up for no apparent reason, please let me know and if there was a cause for it

Final marsh ditch surveys for my local salt marsh today which is a shame really because I’ve enjoyed this job, nice to work somewhere you go regularly anyway! We also had sheep along the drain for the first time which Indy was interested in for about 10 seconds. Zero herding instinct

Our #WaterResearch seminar series continues next month with a discussion on #Hydrology. Prof. David Large, Dr. Ros Tratt, Dr. Pete Jones, and Prof. Joe Holden will join a panel to bring fascinating insights and answer your questions. #PeatlandHydrology Information and registration bit.ly/4301otJ

Study shows reintroducing wolves to Scottish Highlands could help address climate emergency. Wolves control red deer, leading to expansion of native woodland which stores one million tonnes of CO2 annually 🐺🌳 See here 👇 https://buff.ly/3EHFNfr 🌎🧪

🚨Fully funded PhD opportunity!🚨 Join CREWW, the University of Exeter’s world-leading research group tackling water & environmental challenges. This PhD, funded by South West Water & the Environment Agency, will explore upland valley mire restoration & its role in climate resilience. Please share!

Couple more bog #35mm photos from 2024. One from a peat coring day at Pelenna research site as a record of before trees were felled, and a cameo of one of @scootjd.bsky.social signs at the Lost Peatlands Castell Nos site which I took to test how the colours came through on that particular film stock

Next up on the #35mm Valleys uplands tour is this orchid from Pelenna forest trackside, which I’m happy with, it was my teleconverter test photo taken from a way back. At first I thought it was a candidate for a heath spotted and southern marsh hybrid, but actually I think it’s just a southern marsh

Nice story on the beeb about water voles in the uplands of the Afan and Rhondda valleys www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The Lost Peatlands final ecology and hydrology report is testing the limits of what a local government laptop is capable of. Only two more appendices to go!

Continually impressed at the massive solar arrays at the Bryce Canyon visitor centre, I had to stand way back to get them both in frame. Could do with a couple on the Rhigos. Shot on Ilford FP4 plus, which had a weird ISO of 125 that my camera couldn’t be set to so I did 100, glad it worked #35mm

Passed on my wanderings today, this green roof was funded through a grant a friend and I got from the Royal Anniversary Trust to look at nature based solutions on and off campus. The rest of the grant paid for meadow management and Sphagnum growing beds we use to grow local stock for reintroduction

Housing🤝Nature To deliver much-needed housing while ensuring that our natural environment is protected and enhanced, the Government must work closely with ecologists, planners, landscape architects and other environmental experts.

Couple of #35mm photos from Skomer last year when we finally managed to make it to see the puffins. The trip was first cancelled from lockdown. Took 4 years to rearrange. It was the first trip I took my camera on, and so maybe the worst photos technically, but I really like them. Used Fujicolour 200

The first of a few #35mm bog photos I had developed from last years stock. This one from Castell Nos peatland restoration site at the head of the Rhondda Fach. Think this one was on Kodak Gold 200.

Some very positive news in that the vast majority of the 35mm photos I took over the past year were successfully processed at the lab, other than one roll of film which just didn’t wind on. That’s the content sorted for this week! I’ll put up a few of my favourites, starting with this one of Indy

On the tenth anniversary of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are proud of the strong team of #Women #Scientists working across #Research, #Policy, and #Practice within the IUCN UK Peatland Programme #Peat #STEM #Diversity

Hi Friends I have started a new Substack account where I post my writings and musings as well as some stories and other stuff . I have just uploaded a new piece about the Cadoxton Murder stone near Neath . I would really appreciate any new subscribers?. open.substack.com/pub/owenstaton

Sun managed to sort of hold on for the couple of hours from Ogmore to Dunraven Castle and back for Indy’s birthday walk. One tired pup at the end of it!

All set up #Llanilleth, ready for the Gwent-Glamorgan Recorders' Forum to begin!

There's a postdoc in peatland biogeochemistry advertised on our project by Dolly Kothawala and Gustaf Granath at Uppsala University. I can highly recommend Uppsala as a place to live and work. www.uu.se/en/about-uu/...

The final upcoming professional training session for Lost Peatlands is on Wednesday, and it’s online so you can join from all over the world if you want to. This one is focused on effective communication from Smirk Experience. Link at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lp-pro-tra...

For another #WorldWetlandsDay focussed post here’s a couple of highlights from my trip to the Glamorgan Archives last year to look for some peat and people interactions over the years from south Wales. One from Llyn Fawr and one from East Moors Steelworks in Cardiff. More detail in the alt text!

#DiwrnodGwlypdiroeddYByd #WorldWetlandsDay Dathlu pawb sy’n ymdrechu i’w gwarchod a’u hadfer dros genedlaethau’r dyfodol. Celebrating all who protect and restore them for future generations. #NaturUwchCarbonIs #HighNatureLowCarbon #AdferMawndirCymru #WalesPeatlandAction

It’s #WorldWetlandsDay and if you want to know what’s been happening in south Wales with the #LostPeatlands project, look no further! Big things coming soon as well youtu.be/g459lzaBM_o?...

Happy World Wetlands Day! And what a better way to celebrate, than to announce that #PeatNeeds is back! Applications are now open for $100 CAD microgrants. #PeatECR (within 7 years of terminal degree) are eligible for funding. For more information or to apply see docs.google.com/forms/d/1O6J...

I didn’t manage to actually take any photos of the #LostPeatlands celebration event, but I’m grateful someone managed to get this photo of @mikeshewring.bsky.social wondering what the hell I’m talking about
