Truly sprawling (as it should be in this part of spring) raw-file Midwest Fishing Report. Options are many around Chicago. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

First spinach sprouts of the year on March 11th. Not bad considering I planted them in the snow on February 15th. I think the hot day yesterday kicked them in.

Fish of the Week on a bonus species at Braidwood Lake, flathead catfish. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Column for today on the Illinois Big Tree Register, one of the many things that caught my attention last weekend at the Wild Things conference in Rosemont. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

The last week or so the door betwen winter and spring swinged open around Chicago outdoors: From red-winged blackbrids to big river walleye and northern pike to crocuses. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Guess people were ready to go fishing or feel like spring. Most sprawling raw-file Midwest Fishing Report in months. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

I am old enough to still marvel at eagles, but this is going extreme at Saganashkee Slough. Also a couple at Steelworkers Park on Chicago's Southeast Side. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

A human side to the multitude of terminations at Midewin. Here is why this stuff matters, this is the story of the guy supervising building maintenance and his termination. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Looks like it will warm up enough for a good Polar Adventure Day for the Chicago Park District, plus major shows in Indianapolis and Madison. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

I find the anomaly of great fishing and a cooling lake for a power plant one of those mind-blowing things in life. Looks like another promising season at Braidwood Lake, which reopens March 1. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Sprawling raw-file Midwest Fishing Report. Seems like a lot of people were out before the brutal cold set in. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Shed of the Week, sorta, kinda. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Fish of the Week. For whatever reason, I receive fewer ice-fishing photos than during open water fishing. I suspect that is partly because the more challenges to a good photo while geared up for ice fishing. But here's a doozy. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Wandering the Henry Decoy Show, getting a question answered and asking questions about why people collect what they do. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

In the snow today, I planted spinach on Feb. 15 as usual in memory of Grandma Bowman. She dug trenches in the fall, then saved a coal bucket of soil until Feb. 15. Then she planted peas, covering with saved soil. I use spinach instead of peas because of my family's preferences.

Notes package, as always with much help from readers and those who know. Led by a lakefront beaver, which is not usual. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

@danbernstein.bsky.social. Might be a stretch on PA deer hunters, but it's near a religion there. In high school, more than a million hit the woods opening day. Most schools had opening day off. At our school, if you went with a family member you could legally miss another day, too.

Shows and the like, which seem like good ideas on what looks to be a wintry weekend. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Column on one of my favorite topics, the intersection of art and the outdoors. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

A hint for those of us who wander around staring at the ground this time of year (or searching for shed antlers). chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

I think it is time for a reminder primer on what to do if you encounter a suspected case of avian flu. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

Here's a preliminary accounting of Illinois' overall deer harvest for the '24-25 seasons. Not sure if the numbers indicate anything unexpected. chicago.suntimes.com/outdoors/202...

I really enjoy the Chicago Travel & Adventure Show in Rosemont. It was already packed before the doors even officially opened. I find it overwhelming, yet stimulating.
