Ahhh New Haven

After analyzing more than 100 videos I can easily say millions of people are protesting Trump today. Without a doubt. #NoKings

JPMORGAN: “.. The trade war shock is still material. .. we now estimate an effective ex-ante tariff rate of 14.4%. This is akin to a $475bn tax hike on US households and businesses, worth 1.6% of GDP (still sitting close to the largest tax hike in the post WWII period).”

It’s really striking how irregular the bands of mostly men conducting federal immigration enforcement are. They seem to have no particular uniform, they wear a variety of different agency initials on their tactical vests, or none at all, they’re inconsistent about displaying a badge…

New from me: language in the House reconciliation process would gut courts' power to enforce contempt rulings. That's a threat to justice not only in the Trump disputes at hand, but also across the private economy and, crucially, in other areas where government has violated constitutional rights. /1

Just a reminder that Trump/DOJ continuing to let Abrego Garcia sit in CECOT is *a crime*. Deprivation of rights under color of law is a crime. Was it an "error" at first? Maybe. But once they were aware of the error, and ordered by a judge to return him, and then refusing, it's willful 1/

As of Friday, there have been 46 cases in which federal judges have blocked Trump policies. The rulings in those cases have come from 39 different judges appointed by 5 different presidents (of both parties) to 11 different district courts across 7 different circuits. Maybe it's not the judges?

multiple issues here: -it’s unamerican and unconstitutional for the federal govt—and certainly the executive on its own, arbitrarily and in secret—to create a speech code for visa holders -even if that was permissible, suddenly accosting her in the street and abducting her is wildly disproportionate

Trump seems genuinely surprised and unsettled when bullying doesn’t work. He thought Putin was “genius” and “savvy” for attacking Ukraine, and is frustrated it hasn’t worked already. Similar with tariffs on US allies. When targets fight back rather than bow down, it throws off his whole worldview.

“People should see the texts in order to reach their own conclusions.” @jeffreygoldberg.bsky.social and @shaneharris.bsky.social share the group chat in which officials planned strikes on Yemen. theatln.tc/AHkpb39A

Discussed this with my undergrads just now and asked them what their immediate first question should be in response, and one young man said “what is illegal protest?” to which I replied “ding, ding ding!”

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company. It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create. They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms. I’m happy to invest and/or help

Setmayer: No, you got your chance and I'm going to have mine right now about this for the for the law enforcement officers who lost their careers, who almost lost their lives, who protected those ungrateful bastards…

I’m sure it’s just my TDS, but I think Trump is proving to be exactly as bad as we said he was going to be and people who acted like we were hysterical should be embarrassed they didn’t do more to try and stop it.

Rumors of a $40 million Musk ad buy appear to have been unfounded

"One was fired by email at 12:47 am. Another wept with colleagues as security escorted her from the office. A third frantically tried to fill a prescription after she got a 24-hour notice that her health care was ending." Stories of the purged. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/09/u...

Hunch: The cuts in NIH indirect research costs will cause a real backlash. It's not just that medical research will be hurt. Those funds support many people of all incomes directly and indirectly. And the suddenness and lack of consultation makes it seem arbitrary, as it was.

My take, essentially, is that we could be weeks or maybe even days away from the disintegration of the rule of federal law in this country. At some point this administration is going to stop obeying court orders. What then? Nothing good.

What she said 👇🏼

I wrote about the importance of "prebunking," in light of rumors that Elon Musk may have purchased $40 million in Super Bowl ads to spread misinformation about the "fraud" and "corruption" in this vital agency. I hope you will read and share asharangappa.substack.com/p/prebunking...

He's running our country like one of his casinos, where the lights and the noise keep people from noticing the grime (and the crime) all around them, and where the free buffet and the chance at a big payoff are designed to make people forget that the house always wins.

Defying fears of a pandemic-driven Great Depression and bucking Federal Reserve interest rate hikes as well, the US job market has hit what US central bank officials are characterizing as a moment of stable full employment reut.rs/42SwrY6

This is a five-alarm fire if true. And if BLS specifically is in the cross-hairs markets should flip out

NEW: We uncovered more deleted tweets from Darren Beattie, the White House aide fired in 2018 for speaking at a conference alongside white nationalists who Trump just appointed to a top level State Department job. In purged tweets, Beattie cheered on Jan 6th riot. www.cnn.com/2025/02/03/p...

"I can’t tell you what the market is going to say, because I don’t know how quickly it’s able to assimilate reality....Because the reality is that tariffs are the least of our problems." Monday's Triad from JVL out now: www.thebulwark.com/p/follow-the...

Yes. Finally, some meaningful pushback against these constitutional outlaws. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

All of your most sensitive data and our country’s checkbook are in the hands of an unelected billionaire. This is the most corrupt administration in history and it’s putting our economy & government in serious jeopardy. It’s time to speak out and fight back. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/u...

If Dems don’t call it impeachable now, it won’t be effective to call it impeachable later. Go on record now.

I made a little picture to help explain to the MAGAts why Pete Hegseth's utter ignorance about ASEAN actually matters, especially for a guy who says he wants to roll back Chinese influence.

“As set forth in the original and superseding indictments, when it became clear that Mr. Trump had lost the election and that lawful means of challenging the election results had failed, he resorted to a series of criminal efforts to retain power,” the report states. www.cnn.com/2025/01/14/p...

The language and the truth are important here. I’ve had to interrupt both tv and radio presenters who said Trump won a majority of votes. He didn’t. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Liz Cheney responds to Trump latest. Bravo.

“[2024] is expected to end with a nearly 16% drop in homicides …. “The three consecutive years of declining homicides come in the wake of a 30% jump in murders between 2019 and 2020, the largest single-year increase in more than a century.” abcnews.go.com/amp/US/unite...
