PUBLISHERS: when you open an Ingram sales sheet, you're not the only one who gets this alert; EVERYONE does. 100% Ingram's fault. File is tab-delimited, but the .xls extension looks like a trick to fake the file-type as old Excel. I've asked Ingram repeatedly to fix this, and so should you.

This reads like the opening paragraph of a novel so bleakly dystopian you'd put it down after five pages

Controversial story idea: a serial killer who preys exclusively on the worst of the pardoned Jan 6 rioters.

The reality behind the whole 51st state thing.

EVERY SINGLE CITY, IN EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY, NEEDS TO DO THIS WHEN WE TAKE AWAY THEIR WEALTH WE ALSO TAKE AWAY THEIR POWER #PeoplePower #StrengthInNumbers #BoycottBezos #BoycottMusk #BoycottZuckerberg

Current mood

Elon Musk is orchestrating a coup of the US government. In the past 48 hours he’s gained access to a vast range of sensitive information of millions of citizens, businesses, and foreign development projects. This is as serious as it gets, and it puts the entire world in danger. FireElon.org

You think you have problems? Imagine it's the end of January and your store is stuck with 80 cartons of oat milk egg nog with a best before of June 2025.

In future time travel stories, characters will go back in time to eliminate Trump and Musk

And to answer the question, “how could I love Costco even more?”:

Whatever else you are feeling today, at least there are these words, at long last, to celebrate: "Mr. Biden also commuted the life sentence for Leonard Peltier, the Native American activist who was convicted of killing two F.B.I. agents in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota."

Vancouver delivers all manner of sky magic.

I've just listened to Elvis Costello's 1989 album "Spike" in its entirety for the first time in a long time, and I'm convinced it's one of the best albums ever. What songs! What a voice! And Chrissy Hinde's backup vocal on still Satellite haunts me. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_(...

Here me out: make the shells of stuffed dog toys from Kevlar.

Yeeeeeaaah, the doomerism thing is real bullshit. As a nation we were collectively stupid enough to let him get back into a seat of power, but it's now our responsibility to collectively put as many goddamn tacks onto that seat as we possibly can. Make Power Fucking Painful is the mantra for 2025.

Vigilantism as a symptom of a system where crimes either don't get prosecuted, or, in the case of corporate behaviour, actual crimes aren't even defined as such, e.g., bankrupting sick people. What are other examples?

Publishers! PubGizmo.com is software I wrote for chbooks.com (pub: THE SLEEPING CAR PORTER, Giller Prize winner, endorsed by Michelle Obama), available for cheap subscription, because I believe in, and am published by, small presses, and doing royalties any other way sucks. Now 10% off first year.

Ah, Goosey, we hardly knew ye

I expect nothing less than confetti canons and party horns once I complete today's meditation.

This…this is it. In a nutshell, yes.

Vancouver outer harbour, fog and sunshine, 11am, December 2nd, 2024.

To pardon someone, the president should have to write a 1000 word essay justifying their reasoning, and it should be graded, and the pardon authorized, by their grade 9 English teacher. No pass, no pardon.

Get on over to whatever.scalzi.com, where @scalzi.com is generously hosting the Whatever Shopping Guide 2024, featuring creative gifts posted by the creators themselves. Today is the stuffy-sounding-but-not "traditionally-published books" issue. More to come throughout the week. Thanks, John!

For those too young to remember the conviction of Native American activist Leonard Peltier, and the case for his release, here’s a primer from @amnestyuk.bsky.social. www.huffpost.com/entry/amnest...

very nice! an american variation on our own canadian small press map, / festivalofauthors.ca/small-press-...

If you need a permission slip to leave Twitter, this is it. I also give you permission to replace shoes that don't fit, a mattress or chair that hurts your back, and glasses that are the wrong prescription. Life is hard enough. There is no valor in unnecessary suffering.

Agree 100%.

In a publishing contract, always try to get a percentage of <list>, not <net> sales. List pays more, since it’s based on your book’s list price. Net is based on what your publisher receives for the sale from the retailer, which is always less than list.

Authors and small publishers: ask me about royalties. As both an author and developer of PubGizmo.com, my understanding of net vs. list, escalation, advances, rights, reserve on returns, etc. goes deep. I can help you understand contract clauses, and their financial implications. #publishing

I know it's a tad early but I know those bitches with the buckets will be out soon. Don't gove them a penny. The volunteers may not know but the salvation army is no ally and actively combative and harmful to many queer minorities especially during the holiday season

That said, today I worked not in a café, but Vancouver's seaplane terminal on Coal Harbour. Good wifi, comfy seating, and the view. THE VIEW.
