Caught myself typing “an apron that has frills” for フリルのあるエプロン as though “has frills” is a thing we commonly say and English doesn’t have an adjective meaning exactly that. #AmTranslating

Love this line of cigarette smoke drawing your eye to the speech bubble. It's like the manga version of punctuating a sentence by exhaling a cloud of smoke. #AmReading

Starting a new book in English, I just asked myself—in all seriousness—“Which way do books open?” My brain clearly needs a break. #AmReading

Once again, Google Translate is "helping".

Yes, if you use generative ai in any creative field, I am actually better than you. There’s no debate

“This is more of a comment than a question.”

You'd think the combined power of AI summary and Google Translate would be able to solve this puzzle, but no. It's almost like you need human beings who understand culture and nuance to provide meaningful translations between languages. #AmTranslating

Brain vs Arrogance!

Learn what it takes to be an interpreter! An online event that is too early (Tokyo time) for my liking but I will probably be watching nonetheless bc it looks like it will be a great talk!

Guess who wrangled an invitation to the Akutagawa/Naoki Prize ceremony? #AmLiteraryPrizing

For what it's worth (these don't usually make any difference), there is an official petition for the Government of Canada to leave Twitter/X www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en...

Early-career literary translators, here is a grant for you! You could apply for it and get some help bringing a precious translation baby into this world!

Love that revenge and revision are homophones in Japanese. A typo that completely changes the meaning of your sentence. #AmTranslating

They gave my queen a CAPE for Hina Matsuri!! Her Majesty is truly ruling the fashion scene now!

In the wildest of timeline serendipities, I see this pic and it looks like a friend, but I think it can’t be him bc why would he be in a J-newspaper? So I click to check if it’s really him, and not only is it, @mangasplaining.bsky.social and @debaoki.bsky.social are in the article, too.

By far the funniest vehicular homicide I've ever seen. Just sucked under the car like it's a steamroller. #AmTranslating

Is this weird? This feels weird. Like, GenAI wrote this description weird. Why would the tagline for a new show be "we got two kinds of subtitles"?

First draft: Every word I write is so bad. Why am I such an awful translator? How can I be so terrible at English and Japanese at the same time? This whole thing is garbage, total trash fire. Second draft: Oh! This is actually pretty good. Maybe I’m not a fraud, after all. Every. Single. Book.

Ontario, remember to check where you vote and be ready, since this weather doesn't look like it'll ease up anytime soon: www.elections.on.ca/en.html #onpoli

GenAI isn't programmed to be accurate and check facts. More people need to realise it is NOT a search engine, it's a chat bot programmed to sound human through the statistical likelihood that words will appear in a certain order. LLMs are not search engines. Do not use them for research.

Takako Shimura's series about a lesbian and the married woman who falls for her, Even Though We're Adults" will be getting a live-action drama: natalie.mu/comic/news/6...

Look, Ontario voting people. I spent thirty dollars on postage to make sure my ballot gets back to Canada in time to be counted. The least you can do is head over to your polling station and cast your vote for free.

When I do my final check of a book, I’m always delighted when I find oversights/errors since it makes the final check worthwhile. But then I wonder why I missed anything in the first place and what else I missed in the final check… #AmTranslating

Great article on an excellent press doing amazing work to expand the range of books in translation!

My terrible katakana eigo skills are occasionally a real issue in light novel translation. ルースレス is much more likely to be “ruthless” and not “looseless” (not even a real word!) as was my first guess… #AmTranslating

Confused by a surprise increase in my bank balance today until I remember I signed up for direct deposit for PLR payments. Then I was delighted that so many people are taking my translations out of the library!

I think I found the subreddit that will finally get me to join Reddit.

It's kinkan season!! If you're not making candied kumquats, what are you even doing with your life! Sincerely, a person who just ate some candied kumquats and has never been happier with their life choices
