#bales2025moviechallenge - Darth Vader The Indian in the Cupboard (1995) Director Frank Oz sought and received permission from George Lucas for Anakin senior’s cameo in this magical 90s fantasy about a boy with a supernatural cupboard. youtu.be/bYHTnuvA65M?...

#bales2025moviechallenge - computer mouse Office Space (1999) Office culture is something I don’t miss much. But I do love this hilarious dark satire of it.

#bales2025moviechallenge - nuclear Wizards (1977) As a child I was fascinated by this Ralph Bakshi film about the battle between magic and technology in the remnants of Earth after it’s been devastated by nuclear war.

#bales2025filmchallenge - License Plate Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) The 1961 Ferrari GT has a vanity plate that says “NRVOUS”, like Cameron. “My father loves his car more than life itself.” “A man with priorities so far out of whack doesn't deserve such a fine automobile.”

#bales2025moviechallenge - World War I Gallipoli (1981) My favorite war movies are anti-war. They honestly portray the horrifying reality of war in an emotionally wrenching way. This Australian WWI Peter Weir movie fits that description. Maybe my favorite Mel Gibson performance.

#bales2025moviechallenge - Shakespeare quote Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) Gene Wilder’s slight bastardization of the Merchant of Venice improved over Shakespeare. “So shines a good deed in a weary world”. My mantra is to be that good deed whenever I can (as the world is weary).

#bales2025moviechallenge - save the world Hare-Way to the Stars (1958) Bugs accidentally boards a rocket to space and finds himself with Marvin right before he is about destroy the Earth. Can he save us all? No spoilers, but a hint, this was 1958 and we’re all still here.

#bales2025moviechallenge - hotel A Room With a View (1985) This adaptation of the EM Foster novel that centers in part around a country hotel in Florence, Italy is a thriller with a murder, but it’s equally funny and romantic. RIP Julian Sands.

#bales2025moviechallenge - Easter It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown (1974) I’m a Charles Schultz fan. As a child Peanuts was my favorite and I passed that love down to my kids. Easter Beagle is not iconic like Christmas and Great Pumpkin are, but it’s great.

#bales2025moviechallenge - clothesline Lady and the Tramp (1955) Lady and the tramp takes place in New England. But the famous Tony’s restaurant scene feels European, including the clothesline strung between 2 buildings.

#bales2025moviechallenge - Friday Adventures in Babysitting (1987) I love this After Hours inspired 80s movie about one crazy Friday night.

#bales2025moviechallenge - maple syrup Wedding Crashers (2005) “I happen to know everything there is to know about maple syrup”. dai.ly/xqrz7v

#bales2025moviechallenge - Ben Kingsley The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023) Wes Anderson at his best (Rushmore) is brilliant. Other times his work seems forced so I worried about this one as I love Roal Dahl. In the end though it was lovely. Kingsley as Imdad Khan.

#bales2025moviechallenge -cruise ship Death on the Nile (1978) I love a good crime mystery. Before there was Benoit Blanc there was Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. The all star cast has a lot of fun in this story of murder on a luxury cruise ship on the Nile.

#bales2025moviechallenge -Great Depression O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) The Coen’s surreal take on the Odyssey is different than Nolan. But I love the satirical story of escaped convicts looking for treasure in the Depression era South. It’s as fun as movies get.

#bales2025moviechallenge - Tiger Aladdin (1992) Jasmine’s pet tiger Raja.

#bales2025moviechallenge -manned spaceship Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century (1953) Duck Rogers travels to Planet X when the shaving cream element becomes depleted. He claims it for Earth, but must contend with Marvin, my favorite Looney Tunes character, who claims it for Mars.

#bales2025moviechallenge -cheese A grand day out (1989) Years ago, when you might not yet have been born, the original 3 Wallace & Gromit movies were on PBS. I recorded them and watched them often. The best one? A grand day out, where we learn the moon is indeed made of cheese.

#bales2025moviechallenge -Siblings Spirited Away (2001) Yubaba and Zeniba are identical twin sisters (or are they?). But they are as different as can be. Yubaba’s transactional based “what can you do for me” and her delight in cruelty is countered by Zeniba’s gentle kindness.

#bales2025moviechallenge - unicorn Shrek (2001) Shrek is a film that judgmental me knew I would hate. But judgmental me had to eat crow. With its sweet and edgy humor and surprisingly strong soundtrack I am a fan. While we don’t learn it until Shrek 3, Donkey is 1/8 unicorn.

#bales2025moviechallenge - Set in Japan High and Low (1964) Kurosawa’s venture into noir. I only finally saw High and Low just this year. Audiences and critics in 1964 found it to be one of the best crime thrillers ever made. 60 years later and I feel the same way.

#bales2025moviechallenge - basketball Fletch (1985) “He’s actually 6’5” . . . 6’9” with the afro. youtu.be/i7AUpGXLDdk?...

#bales2025moviechallenge - Olympics Running Brave (1983) I really love this early Robby Benson movie about Native American runner Billy Mills who went from the University of Kansas to winning a gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

#bales2025moviechallenge - Chicago Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) John Hughes truly spoke to teens. He took them seriously as nuanced and multi faceted characters. Teens weren’t used to that and it was empowering. One of his best was Ferris, his love letter to Chicago.

#bales2025moviechallenge - fighting for civil rights Les Misérables (2018) 🎶Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with me? Beyond the barricade Is there a world you long to see? Then join in the fight That will give you the right to be free!

#bales2025moviechallenge - mail carrier Won’t You be My Neighbor (2018) One of the best films of 2018 was this gentle documentary about a kind hearted man of the type that the world could use more of today. Appearances by most of his original cast including postman David Newell (Mr. McFeely)

#bales2025moviechallenge - autism Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993) This film about a child chess prodigy is one of my favorites of all time. The real Bobbie Fischer, who many doctors believe likely was autistic, appears in newsreel footage.

#bales2025moviechallenge - a fool The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) Heart racing, wrenching and warming, it somehow isn’t mentioned as often as its Disney peers. I imagine it’s the adult content. It merits a PG13 but somehow received a G. youtu.be/_5BcPCnYt-k?...

#bales2025moviechallenge - father Pretty in Pink (1986) Harry Dean Stanton is great as Andie’s underemployed single parent father. He is broke and has little to offer his daughter except unconditional love and support. And of course, that is more than enough.

#bales2025moviechallenge - mythology The Secret of Kells (2009) Academy award nominated and beautiful Irish folklore story of a young boy who must protect a sacred book and embark on a mystical journey.
