Come join us at TBB in simulating the sh*t out of everything related to biology! :) (in this case, evo-devo/ animal development in general!)

🧬🌽 Happy Transposon Day! 🌽🧬 Today we celebrate the birthday of Barbara McClintock - scientist extraordinaire and discoverer of jumping genes. Still the only woman to have an unshared Nobel Prize in the biomedical sciences #TransposonDay2025

We should call failed sceptics what they are: cynical. Nobody should take pride in being a cynic.

Symbiosis stories keep giving intrigue and importance. Very interesting.

Happy pride, folks! <3

This is still open for another week or so! Please apply :)

My brain wouldnt science this morning so I wrote a pretentious blog (as one does). I think biology-first modelling deserves more attention. It’s not the only way, but it’s one of the few that can capture the unruly, generative, and surprising nature of life. thevirtuallaboratory.com/blog/biology...

Some random guy talking about evolution 🙊 #NWOlife #LTEE

🧩 PhD Position – Origins of Darwinian Inheritance 🧩 This joint PhD project between the @rug.nl (Rampal Etienne & Martijn Egas) and @utrechtuniversity.bsky.social (Bram van Dijk) explores how simple prebiotic systems could evolve reliable information transfer. Apply here: shorturl.at/WgYMF

📣 🥳 🧑‍💻 Our department is hiring: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor / Associate Professor in Bioinformatics at Aarhus University, Denmark Deadline June 1st Thanks for sharing! mbg.au.dk/en/news-and-...

Diversity is our strength❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 On #IDAHOT, we reaffirm our commitment to end violence and discrimination against LGBTIQ people — and raise the progressive flag at our headquarters. Respect for fundamental rights and equal treatment are key pillars of our Union.

Interested in phages ? Want to work as team that will isolate, genome sequence and charachterise 1000s of phage to build a biobank . Come work with me and Martha Clokie at Leicester jobs.le.ac.uk/vacancies/va...

Longer working hours have been linked to higher emissions, yet the climate movement seems reluctant to join the campaign for a four-day week—a potential strategic error given the social, health and climate benefits of working less. My latest for Sower ⬇️🧪.

PhD position available at @binfutrecht.bsky.social. Join us if you are interested in modelling how plants respond to stress! www.uu.nl/en/organisat...

I am happy to share our latest preprint, spearheaded by Laura Camus. We show that tyrosin-dependent interactions can foster integration of S. aureus into the nasal microbiome. @cmfi.bsky.social @lmumuenchen.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

🎉 We’re hiring! Two ERC-funded #PostdocJobs on insect–phytopathogen mutualisms are available in my lab. Explore the chemical and molecular evolution of symbioses! 🧪Chemical ecology: tinyurl.com/chem-ecol-symb 🦠Phytopathology & mutualisms: tinyurl.com/symb-plantpath #SymbioSky #PlantPathology

How often do people type a response on social media and then opt out and hit “discard” because you realise you’re being a pedantic ****. No? Just me? 💃

Having recently read >500 applications for recent hirings, AI CVs are a fast growing problem Giveaways are summaries eerily matching the job spec (but bearing little relevance to the rest of the CV) & weird generic phrases like “detail orientated” no-one says Tell your mentees/classes to avoid!

We are pleased to announce that registration for 3rd MGE Workshop is now live! If you are interested in giving a talk please register online through our website by Friday 16th May. We look forward to seeing you all in Southampton in June! www.ukmgeworkshop.org

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... Nearly missed my bus stop reading this fascinating review :)

I have written with emdashes – these things – for a long time. Now suddenly, I sound like chatGPT. :(

Elated and honored to have been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant! We’ll explore why beetles lose genes — only to rely on symbionts instead 🪲🦠 Incredibly proud of the team and excited for this project to take off w/ some remarkable beetles! @erc.europa.eu www.bio.mpg.de/466825/news_...

Read preprints. Cite preprints. Email people and tell them you loved their preprint. Email people you hated their preprint. Embrace preprints, preprints are good.

I can’t believe it’s 25 years later, and I still have to watch a tutorial on how to properly put a figure next to a table in Ms Word…

Yesterday someone told me that diffusion of glucose through cellulose is not much slower than diffusion through water. I'm not sure where they get their data from, but how does that compare to agar? Does glucose diffuse faster/slower through soft/hard agar? I always assumed so, but now I'm doubting.

Excited about microbiomes and want to study them at the single-cell level? Join our team to pioneer research using microfluidics paired with automated timelapse microscopy. We're hiring motivated postdocs to push the boundaries of microbial ecology! Apply now: apply.interfolio.com/165601

Preprint out! Bacteria w/ hyper-replicative filamentous phage lead to overnight emergence of cheater phages. Bacteria w/ both phages can outcompete wildtype, then rapidly lose phage via a phage Tragedy of the Commons @shellyscrib.bsky.social @vscooper.micropopbio.org www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Cool review on the tiniest ecological interactions, probably with impressive consequences to life writ large www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Some people may respond very salty to this, but I would say: welcome back! 🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧

The time has come to demand a referendum to Rejoin the European Union. If we can rejoin it won't erase the decade of ruined opportunities, the loss of prestige, the billions of £s wasted, but the sooner we get back, the quicker we can heal and get stronger. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...
