www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc... Well at least Hegseth didn't just send them to Fox?

This is an opportunity for nations like Canada to reclaim the mRNA platform by investing heavily in its local development. It truly is transformative technology that will help define a new age of immunotherapy.

“Those nasty Canadians are ripping us off and are controlled by Mexican cartels. They’re poisoning us with fentanyl and need to become the 51st state or they will pay a high price” is a belief that literally ZERO Americans had six weeks ago. It’s entirely invented from scratch.

Science is under attack and increasingly mistrusted. We can work against proximate threats like specific politicians, but we need a strategy for addressing the base cause, which is that our current information system favours extreme views over truth, and that is having anti-science consequences

Is there a social media system that can promote truth? I'm not sure. Selection for attention over truth will be part of any online ecosystem. Is there any antidote that would be acceptable in a democratic system? I'm not sure of that either. Seems like this issue is at the root of many problems

Yes, we can have extreme cold even though the climate is warming. #ClimateChange 🧪🌎

As Canadian sovereignty is undermined and an election approaches, politicians are calling for an investigation of X #Canada #ElonMusk #DonaldTrump thetyee.ca/News/2025/02...

This is very interesting. And it's not the only issue around ecological theory built on systems that are disrupted or human-impacted in strong ways.

I wish more Americans were shouting about how inappropriate these casual remarks about taking over a neighbouring country are. Imagine the American response another country spoke that way about the US. We're in such uncharted waters. It's very sad.

What do food chemistry and social media have in common? In free markets, they select for outcomes that are probably undesirable. Food chemistry: Sales are optimized when food chemistry makes unhealthy food addictive. Social media: Attention is not optimized by truth but crazy Thoughts?

Scientific objectivity has historically been a source of academic criticism. Scientists are human and that the science we do is related to who we are and where we come from. Having a more diverse scientific community broadens the scope of science that is done, increasing its overall objectivity.

In this study authors concluded that beekeeping compromises wild bee conservation in nature reserves. Both taxonomic (TD) and phylogenetic (PD) diversity of wild bees was reduced near to beehives. Keep away beehives from protected areas Tourbez et al. (2025) APIDOLOGIE doi.org/10.1007/s135...

I'm pro free speech but I'm deeply concerned with misinformation, and particularly the fact that it seems to be unequally spread and believed across the political spectrum. Absolutely nobody should trust social media companies, or rich people, to come up with an answer. Especially a costly one.

Imagine being so convinced your country is the best in the world that when your lunatic of a president talks about taking over sovereign nations you decide to write an op-ed in the New York Times about how good idea it would be for Canada to join your crazy, falling-apart country.

Amazing birthday oped by Chrétien. He should lead #TeamCanada effort including attend 1st official mtg w/ Trump, look him in the eye & say: "Give your head a shake. Canadians will never give up the best country in the world to join the U.S. Now we can talk."❤️🇨🇦 www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

Jimmy Carter has a fair claim to being the most effective former president his country ever had, Todd S. Purdum writes:

nhl.com/news/al-macneil-dies-at-89-won-stanley-cup-4-times-with-canadiens-flames My late uncle Al was a quiet, soft-spoken, friendly, and generous guy who was always quick with a smile and loved to talk about hockey. I remember being asked as a kid why I always had Flames shirts (Atlanta too!)

I do my best thinking when I'm thinking.

Having switched to paired experimental designs in the field, I'm seeing some different things. I'd love to do a comparison of paired plot vs. randomly located plot treatment studies on the same thing to examine differences more directly. Has anyone seen a study like that?

If you're heading to the British Ecological Society Meeting in Liverpool next week, and you're interested in flowering time, plant community ecology, competition, and community assembly, consider coming to my talk. I'd love to see you there.

It's so lovely when I tell members of my extended family what I study, and they pay close attention as I explain, making a clear effort to look like they find it interesting.

Hope to see some of you early next week in Liverpool at the British Ecological Society meeting.

An absolute must read essay by @cathmckenna.bsky.social in the Toronto Star. No punches pulled. 🔥 www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

I love being the first one up on a dark morning and having coffee by the illumination of Christmas lights.

Nanight....

I'm disappointed that Biden pardoned his son. But we shouldn't be surprised that Democrats are starting to behave like Republicans when in the election, Americans very clearly signaled they support that kind of behaviour.

Are other universities working to adapt curriculum to meet the challenges of training students to navigate and manage the new information environment, particularly online? This seems to me to be a role university's should be tackling.
