A wild day of tornadoes in Texas, including one that spun clockwise www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2025...

We cannot run a society on the whims of the rich. TAX THEM. Publicly fund what we all need.

(1/4) It was America and Britain that guaranteed the sovereignty of Ukraine and its borders in return for persuading them to give up their nuclear weapons.

Now more than 400 university presidents; more than half of all the schools in the AACU. And it's growing by leaps and bounds every day. Eventually everyone will have signed except the president of Stanford, because mumble mumble something something neutrality www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-c...

Why don't we hear more about people fighting organisations such as the Heritage Foundation and people like Peter Thiel and all those who provide ideas such as "Project 2025"?

Few heads of state are luckier than Erdogan: No matter how badly he mismanages the Turkish economy or shreds its democracy, every few years events compel European leaders to look past those things and embrace him once again. www.economist.com/europe/2025/...

Do not confuse the political appointees making crazy decisions at NOAA with the excellent and dedicated scientists who work at NOAA, some of them for decades.

I wanted to try and figure out how Neil Gorsuch concluded that 'Pride Puppy', an ABCs book about a lost dog at a pride parade that he insists he read, exposes kids to "bondage" and "sex workers." The answers are somehow even dumber than you can imagine. A brief thread:

22 April is #EarthDay! This year's theme: "Our Power, Our Planet" reminds us that the choices we make today will determine our future climate. Transitioning to low-emission energy systems will have multiple co-benefits, including improvements in air quality & health. ➡️ bit.ly/SRYRpt23

Rike Norge, du skuffer! Hvorfor bryr vi oss ikke så mye om kloden og de neste generasjoner som våre søstre og brødre i andre land? Er vi for opptatt med å feste og feire oss selv? www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Incredible news! 89% of the global public want more climate action, but don't realise they're part of a huge and potentially powerful majority. #The89Percent aims to fix that and motivate climate delayer* politicians to up their game. Well done @dpcarrington.bsky.social & all involved 🧵 1/3...

A 'data transfer software error' apparently was the reason no Mauna Loa CO2 data was posted for 5 days. A deep sigh of relief, grateful to see this back! Next stop, 431 ppm. Thanks @anderbill.bsky.social for the answer.

“A huge 89% majority of the world’s people want stronger action to fight the climate crisis but feel they are trapped in a self-fulfilling ‘spiral of silence’ because they mistakenly believe they are in a minority, research suggests” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

There seem to be some people who have adopted ideas and attitudes from the Middle Ages, wanting to take the world back to that distant past when fear and ignorance ruled - namely those named in this article. Why do they want to go back to a time when life was not so fun? Want the Handmaid's Tale?

"We are not faced with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but one crisis which is both social and environmental. The poor and the earth are crying out." Pope Francis reshaped the global climate conversation. @trufahey.bsky.social wrote about his advocacy way back in 2015:

Your 'moment of doom' for Apr. 22, 2025 ~ Every living thing. "Researchers found 'a significant decline in seasonal snow across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, with snow persistence (the time snow remains on the ground) 23.6% below normal — the lowest in 23 years'" phys.org/news/2025-04...

The majority of people —56% in the US!—are worried about climate change, but not activated. Why not? Most feel helpless, hopeless, and don't know what to do. So more fear won't activate them. Rather, knowing what to do—and being invited to do it—will. Where to start? With a conversation today. 🧵

2024 showed a clear east-west contrast in precipitation across Europe. Western Europe experienced one of its ten wettest years in the last 75 years, while eastern Europe faced drier-than-average conditions. Delve into the data ➡️ https://bit.ly/42nkoAk #ESOTC2024 #C3S

In 2024, Europe was the world’s fastest-warming continent. It had its hottest year on record, impacting an estimated 413,000 people. Sea surface temperatures also reached new highs. As our planet heats up, urgent action is more critical than ever.

I'm giving up working with the CARRA data @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social because I have to download 3-hr data on a Lambert conformal grid with 789 x 989 grid points. Little succes with CDO to merge earlier and later parts. Takes too long to compute monthly means. Actually, quite dissappointed.
