ISHANOU (1990) dropping in May from @secondrun.bsky.social. The first Manipuri film on Blu. Superb 4K restoration from Film Heritage Foundation (India). Very excited to have written the essay for this hidden gem of a film.

A long time in the making, and I really didn't think I had it in me but my book on Indian Parallel Cinema will finally be available tomorrow... www.bloomsbury.com/uk/revolutio...

I am very excited to announce that I am writing a BFI Film Classics book on Mani Kaul's USKI ROTI / A DAY'S BREAD (1969, India) and it will be published by Bloomsbury. It will be the first title on Indian Parallel Cinema. .

Afternoon all. So, Ryan Gilbey, published a piece on Badnam Basti yesterday in The Guardian, and which deliberately erases my curatorial contribution. I am the reason this film will be screening in London tomorrow as part of the season on Indian Cinema I curated: moviemahal.net/2024/12/11/r...

If you missed it here is the curation programme for 'Rewriting The Rules: Pioneering Indian Cinema after 1970'. It was also one of the first curated seasons on Indian Parallel Cinema for a very long time in the UK.

The three month long season on Indian Cinema I have curated for the Barbican Centre comes to an end this Thursday. The final screening is Prem Kapoor's newly restored & rediscovered BADNAM BASTI (1971), India's first queer film. The film has sold out! www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/202...

Next up in Rewriting the Rules at the Barbican is Anand Patwardhan's Raam Ke Naam / In the Name of God (1992). Wed 4 Dec - 7pm. A prescient work, detailing the campaign waged by the militant Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to destroy a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya. www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/202...

Publication Day has finally arrived and The Magic Hours: the Films and Hidden Life of Terrence Malick is finally available. Writing it has been a wonderful experience and yes here is a new special episode of Writers on Film to celebrate open.spotify.com/episode/6xZX...

Will be on BBC Radio London this evening so I can big up Indian Parallel Cinema & the season on Rewriting the Rules at the Barbican Centre that I’ve curated: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p...

Latest piece for the BFI & which details ten contemporary Indian independent films (post 2010) and which was written to tie in with Payal Kapadia's new film All We Imagine As Light and which is currently on release in UK cinemas & which you should really go and watch! www.bfi.org.uk/lists/10-gre...

here, @bressonian.bsky.social has compiled 10 great recent Indian indie films #DesiWatch #FilmSky www.bfi.org.uk/lists/10-gre...

If you are in London, do not miss this screening of John Abraham's AMMA ARIYAN at Barbican Centre. Curated by @bressonian.bsky.social www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/202...

Not long now... Jan/Feb 2025.

Have already submitted my top ten for the 2024 sight & sound poll but I just know once I’ve seen Payal’s film next week it will need revising. Will have to submit a final top ten in the new year since I still have a few films to watch.

good morning

don’t have @letterboxd.social but maybe I need to…

Israel is plotting to colonise Gaza. This is all being openly discussed in the Israeli media. It is a damning indictment that Israeli newspapers offer more details of what's actually happening than newspapers in, say, the US or UK. New post 👇 www.owenjones.news/p/israeli-me...

revisited robson & lewton's seventh victim and it still terrifies... especially in moments like these... minimalist, refined, and chilling...

To tie in with the release of the Merchant-Ivory documentary which is coming to UK cinemas on 6 Dec, I will be at HOME cinemas in Manchester on Sun 8 Dec at 12.45pm to introduce SHAKESPEARE WALLAH which stars Shashi Kapoor & Felicity Kendal. Tickets & info: homemcr.org/film/shakesp...
