As many predicted, Apple is now pulling support for its advanced iCloud security feature in the UK rather than comply with this government demand to weaken encryption www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

"Blatantly illegal": @haroldfeld.bsky.social breaks down Trump's new executive order that tries to wrest power from Congress by making independent US agencies (like the FTC, FCC, SEC and, to some extent, the Fed) answerable to him. Catch the clip here: www.twitch.tv/videos/23856...

Going live NOW to talk about this likely illegal executive order — with a special guest appearance from @haroldfeld.bsky.social, one of the top experts on administrative law and the FCC, a key agency that will be affected by this EO. Watch: twitch.tv/BrainFungi

I'm so old that I remember Republicans erupting in outrage after Obama said the FCC should write Title II-based net-neutrality regulations.

With this EO, Trump is explicitly seizing control of agencies meant to operate free from presidential interference, such as the FCC, FTC, FEC and financial regulators. Now any new regulations must go through the White House. Monumental change here. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

It’s true. Last year I did some reporting around AI and cybersecurity. Email scammers are widely adopting genAI to make fewer spelling and grammatical mistakes, sound more authentic, etc. More people are going to fall for it.

Hahahahaha *sob*

The best part about this is being able to search *your own* post history

A few days late to this but CFPB now has a tip line (on X, of course) for people to complain if agency employees are still doing their jobs. HuffPost confirmed it was legit.

CFPB — the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, aka the federal agency that's increasingly scrutinized fintech, data brokers and digital payments — just fired about 20 of its technologists, per @laurenfeiner.bsky.social www.theverge.com/policy/61293...

A huge, huge deal — with this argument, Trump could try to purge the FTC, FCC, all the multi-member independent agencies that protect consumers and provide oversight and stability to private markets

Musk now joining Vance’s federal judiciary pile-on with a follower poll suggesting judges be purged for holding the executive branch accountable.

Snow day = kiddo is home from school = no Twitch stream during the day today! Might try to hop on tonight instead? If not, then Friday. Until then, here's me and Travis LeBlanc yesterday at #SOTN2025 đź“·: Internet Education Foundation

Last year I moderated an IMF/World Bank/OECD conference on AI in global development. So much of it was “how do we use AI to improve govt data reporting and access?” Now we have to worry if AI will ingest manipulated US data, be part of privatized data collection or be abused by govt statisticians

“You take a clam and it is completely helpless. The only thing you can do is to take care of it. It brings out the emotions of affection.” 🥹

The economy, public health, transportation, even your weather report — so much of it depends on trustworthy government statistics. Now, @alexjamesfitz.com breaks down the coming crisis for public data:

Court orders Musk out of the Treasury computer payment systems until it can sort out whether the DOGE is a legal government entity.

WaPo reports DOGE staffers now have admin access to “highly restricted government records on millions of federal employees“ and can now “install and modify software on government-supplied equipment and, according to two OPM officials, to alter internal documentation of their own activities.”

So we’re doing this whole song and dance again. The Whac-a-mole continues www.wsj.com/tech/ai/lawm...
