Trail report: Yellow Wood Violets blooming, Varied Thrush foraging and Pacific Wrens singing their hearts out.

The university refused to make changes it said would "dictate what private universities can teach" and "whom they can admit and hire," among other things.

Public media facing big potential cuts

Pay attention. Powerful important reporting from NPR.

I happen to know that some powerful media orgs were unhappy that AP filed suit; they thought the conflict with the White House would blow over on its own and that AP risked making bad law. The AP's leadership deserves a lot of credit for having proceeded as it did. apnews.com/article/trum...

Found this in a bathroom in Upstate NY 💡

Today on @npr.org's Morning Edition I report from Sackets Harbor NY on the successful effort by locals - including Republicans and Democrats - to free a migrant family detained last month on a dairy farm. A big part of this reporting was done by the team at our member station @ncprnews.bsky.social.🙏

I'm in tiny Sackets Harbor NY where many locals are celebrating the return of an undocumented migrant family released by the Trump administration after protests and intervention by Republican and Democratic politicians. The story on All Things Considered and Morning Edition from @npr.org

There is no plan.

A lot of journalists portraying what's happening to the American economy right now as something understandable and rational. Heavy use of the words "change" and "plan." But read far enough down in their stories and their sources are using terms like "chaos" and "nuclear winter."

Digging through CDC drug overdose data. Remarkable how much of this is a crisis of white middle age men. There are dangerous racial and ethnic vulnerabilities, and kids are dying. But the biggest single group of people still being lost as deaths decline are white men age 35-65.

The so-called de minimis exemption allowed Chinese and Hong Kong retailers to ship millions of packages worth $800 or less directly to U.S. consumers. That loophole will close May 2. By @brianmannadk.bsky.social

Fascinating situation on X, where RFK Jr. endorses MMR vaccination in Texas to curb their measles outbreak. He is immediately attacked by a former ally, Sherri Tenpenny, who is a very prominent antivaxxer.

I talk with @npr.org's Scot Simon Saturday morning about Trump's order closing a loophole that allowed Americans to shop tax-free directly from Chinese retailers. This new tax has bipartisan support but economists say low-income shoppers will pay $10 billion more each year for goods.

Question: Where would the labor force come from to run a bunch of new American factories and textile mills? Already there are roughly 7.6 million unfilled positions in the US and only 5.6 million unemployed workers who want jobs. The US is aging. We are deporting young workers🤔
