"Today's not the day for a fiscal update," says Carney when asked by @jacoblorinc.bsky.social whether the government's still on track for a $62B deficit after this new $9B in spending. He seemed to suggest earlier that he'll help pay for this by shifting around money from other programs

Mark Carney is giving a speech on dramatically boosting Canada's military spending for a world where US hegemony is receding and other great powers are rising in competition. He says Canada will now hit the 2% NATO spending target this fiscal year. (He previously said by 2030)

Readout of Carney’s call with Modi and (very late) invitation to the G7. Includes this vague line: “Importantly, there was agreement to continued law enforcement dialogue and discussions addressing security concerns.”

Mark Carney spoke with a top Chinese official, Premier Li Qiang, and “exchanged views on bilateral relations, including the importance of engagement, and agreed to regularize channels of communication between Canada and China.” Also discussed trade irritants. Readout:

Carney told reporters today that Canada will "take some time" in deciding on a response to Trump's doubling of metals tariffs. Carney cited ongoing trade talks with the US, but this is also a difference from Trudeau, who typically retaliated immediately with counter-tariffs.

(Bloomberg) -- The Bank of Canada held interest rates steady for a second consecutive meeting, but officials said there may be a need to cut borrowing costs if the economy weakens and inflation remains contained as US tariffs strike.

The most interesting part of that news conference was Mark Carney and Danielle Smith talking about a "grand bargain" in the oil sands: getting companies to build carbon capture in exchange for more oil export capacity. What this looks like in practice is still a big question, of course.

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump said he would be increasing tariffs on steel to 50% from 25%, saying the move would help protect American steelworkers during a visit to a United States Steel Corp. plant on Friday.

March data gives us the first picture of the tariff revenue flowing into the Canadian government, which jumped by $546M year/year. But April and May will be key to watch, depending how widely the government actually applies its counter-tariff exemptions www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
