Sometimes folks ask me, especially in this anti-Amazon atmosphere, where they should buy the book. This is the answer: buy it from the independent arts bookstore owned and operated by our pal @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social!

Wrote about why The Substance is trans and Emilia Perez isn't for Vanity Fair. Also argued that Woodworking (a novel by Emily St. James, out Tuesday) is basically The Substance. Who is my Substance shadow self? It's Sabrina Carpenter. Thanks for asking. www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/st...

I’m very very saddened to hear the news about Michelle Trachtenberg. She was an always-bouncing goofy kid, a ray of sunshine. Awful loss.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

House Republicans just voted to gut Medicaid, which covers 1 in 5 Americans overall, including 41% of births and 63% of nursing home care. They also just voted to gut SNAP, on which 41 million food insecure Americans rely. This won’t just harm people. This will kill people. They own this.

Legitimately the stupidest man alive I cannot fucking STAND this shit

bunch of employees who work at the government facility where they keep ET wet freaking out because they need five things for the email but all they did last week was spray water on ET

I am forever grateful to @avclub.com for letting me express my love for The Traitors. www.avclub.com/the-traitors...

Our editors @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social, @812filmreviews.bsky.social, @nellminow.bsky.social, @clintworthing.bsky.social, and @briantallerico.bsky.social pick their choices for who will win, who should win, and who shave been nominated for one of the most unpredictable Oscars in a very long time.

Every day it’s like “we’re getting rid of a highly qualified woman or minority or disabled person and replacing them with a white guy who majored in skull measuring.”

Listen – it’s not nuts to ask federal employees to report what they’re working on. My staff has to do weekly reports too. But the WAY Musk is doing this? What’s he gonna do, read 2 million emails? This is just not serious stuff.

This would be my email to Elon of five things I did last week: 1. Ate a burrito 2. Walked the dog 3. Watched movies 4. Panicked about the future 5. Tweeted about how dumb you are

If you told me this was 5 years ago today, I would believe it.

No notes

Everyone go read @filmiliarface.bsky.social on @ebertvoices.bsky.social! She is one of my favorite people and her knowledge of film is second to none.

Still deeply affected by Benito’s latest album, I wrote a watchlist of things that complement it for @ebertvoices.bsky.social: www.rogerebert.com/features/mov...

It’s a cult.

Happy to be on the Reacher beat this season for @avclub.com. Fun show (especially for Gen X dads like me)! www.avclub.com/reacher-seas...

I love it when our nazi crackhead shadow president screams slurs at astronauts when they push back on his insane lies

Truly unexpected casting news.

It brings me no joy to tell you that one of the most anticipated shows of 2025 is also going to be one of its goofiest. For @ebertvoices.bsky.social www.rogerebert.com/reviews/zero...

THE GORGE is a lot of fun. Good PG-13 Friday-night-date kind of movie (alas, it is held hostage by AppleTV+). It's been a while since Miles Teller played someone wholly likable. Lively twists and turns. Feels like it was based on a video game (complimentary-ish).

This argument, though well-meant, is tired. Yesterday's dumb comment has become today's topic for "interesting" op-eds and tomorrow's semi-official GOP policy too many times to label anything "a distraction." People can focus on many things at once, including performative stupidity. It all matters.

Ok, but real talk? The sort of low-engagement persuadable Trump voter you need to flip is not going to sit through a serious policy argument, and would not understand it if they did. “He’s calling himself a king” they can understand. So run with it.

Sure, since you asked so nicely! 1. McConnell and the Senate GOP kept Judd Gregg from joining Obama’s Cabinet and blocked Tom Daschle — a powerful senator! — from being Obama’s HHS pick.

I keep seeing this. Guys, their literal job is to figure out what to do. They are not helpless even if they are not the majority. I really hope we can stop treating some of the most powerful people in the world as helpless and without sentience.

A thing I wish I could teach people is that the vast majority of very rich people are deeply stupid. They did not get where they are because of ingenuity or talent. They got there because of compound interest on hereditary wealth and being tax cheats.

It's annoying how clearly this is going to play out. They gut the FAA. Therefore, the FAA can't do its job well because it was gutted. Therefore, they say "The FAA sucks, we have to privatize it." which is what Project 2025 wants to do. They're manufacturing the crises for their end goal.

It also prevents any progressive action. Democrats become the nation’s maids, cleaning up the mess Republicans made and when it isn’t back to the status quo fast enough, people reelect Republicans. It’s a bad cycle.

Please let Stefon be on Update. I don’t ask for much.

It’s quite clear by now that the answer to “why is the Trump administration doing x terrible thing?” is that they are *trying* to dismantle America and destabilize the entire world.

Pretty sure this is how The Last of Us started.

😂😂 look at Pedro Pascal go #snl50

The very definition of dictatorship:

hey @washingtonpost.com i am BEGGING you to stop putting DEI in headlines and accepting the framing of people who are trying to end workplace diversity. Just put diversity! It's 100% accurate and more understandable for the many people who only read headlines. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/int...

I want to find the person who suggested Robyn and David Byrne duet on “Dancing on My Own” and thank them personally.
