Just heard an ad on a podcast that begins with a kid going “my dad works in B2B marketing”

On the one hand: psychoanalysis is scientifically dubious and infected by the misogyny and racism of its innovators. On the other hand: everything about Elon Musk makes me wish CNN had a Senior Freud Correspondent.

To adapt George V. Higgins: when Mitch McConnell meets his Maker, he'll be content to burn in hell, just as long as the Lord says: "Senator McConnell, go to hell."

Given all the music I've listened and re-listened to, I thought for sure my favorite album would change by now, but, nope: it's still TOGETHER WE'RE STRANGER, the best album by my favorite band. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wqum...

I have not been a third party acellerationist voter, but given how the Democrats are behaving now… yeah, I get it now!

I need airlines to understand that the “overstate when the flight lands so you’re happy when you’re early” strategy is pointless if upon arrival we’re waiting on the tarmac because the gate is occupied. That waiting is worse than more flight time!

Islands solve nuke war. Many people are saying this

Obsessed with this image of James Spader visiting Joe’s Pizza NYC seemingly in character as his BLACKLIST self

The thing that has most tested my faith in humanity as of late is how many people so willingly entertain AI as a solution to things. I get why self-serving tech overlords want to spin AI as a cure-all; why are so many ordinary people willing to trust something so obviously flawed and unproven?

I know Sorkin already did SPORTS NIGHT, but it’d be funny if he did a series with the same absurd moral gravity as THE NEWSROOM but about, like, Colin Cowherd’s show. Coldplay/Chainsmokers “Something Just Like This” crescendoing as Colin dials up a rant about Baker Mayfield being a hoodlum.

New research from Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University “finds that as humans increasingly rely on generative AI in their work, they use less critical thinking, which can ‘result in the deterioration of cognitive faculties that ought to be preserved.’” #brainrot #forreal

Though it ended up not being the Oscar contender some speculated, BLITZ sure looks like one. I wrote about Steve McQueen’s state of the nation drama for @mid-theory.bsky.social: mid-theory.com/2025/02/07/m...

Why did that Kendrick halftime show feel like a Suzan-Lori Parks play

“Judges can’t tell people what to do… unless, of course, you’re talking about the unelected philosopher kings in the Supreme Court that enforce deeply unpopular GOP policies by fiat. They can do whatever they want.”

I will say: while it's not exactly true for me that "once you get your first tattoo you'll immediately want to get a bunch more"... it took me 8 years to talk myself into my first, and in the six years since I got my first I got three more. So.. it's not NOT a thing

That new Lady Gaga song is an absolute banger!!

Life in 2025

Guys, rest assured… the future of Bowling for Soup remains bright

Just saw SOMETHING ROTTEN for the first time, which is basically if SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE was a 90s Adam Sandler comedy. Hilariously, the opening song about the Renaissance reads like a parody of THE SWERVE.

Here's the thing about the Democratic bluechecks being smug about Gaza: what, exactly, would Kamala have done differently than what Trump's doing EXCEPT be less garish in her rhetoric about the region?

two things: 1) i’d promised to write a funny essay, but once again my high school teacher was right when he said, “farah, you know you don’t need to be funny in writing?” 2) i’ve, since writing this, solved the mystery of who left me the ferrante novel. mid-theory.com/2025/02/05/h...

baby’s first polemic! i wrote about why i object to the term “the female gaze” for @mid-theory.bsky.social’s forum on the gaze 👀 mid-theory.com/2025/02/05/a...

What a coup for the good folks at Mid Theory! I’ve been eagerly awaiting Martin’s book for quite some time, and this is a fantastic interview.

Going through a really shitty family thing right now, and between that and the Trump/Elon capital coup it's hard not to feel like this.

Gorgeous doom-noir-jazz in the Badalamenti and Bohren vein, from a one man band. Can't beat this $5 deal. ambientmanet.bandcamp.com/album/devour

Very fortunate to have two pieces coming out in @mid-theory.bsky.social’s Oscars series this month. I’m not in the first entry on ANORA, but many of the brilliant writers here express my frustrations with this movie better than I could: mid-theory.com/2025/02/03/2...

My kingdom for a navigation app that actually takes stoplight delays into account

Reading about Felon47 blaming an air crash on DEI, this poem from 2017 leapt off the shelf:

Metal fans: went on a metal pod hosted by my little brother (a budding musician and producer in his own right — a great drummer for hire, LA folks!) and drafted our favorite metal albums of the 2000s. We had fun! youtu.be/HJ8ittYFmvE

Anecdotal exercise for a review I’m writing: music listeners and especially critics, how do we feel about the band Doves?

The whole three-part opening salvo is great, but this might be one of my favorite pieces of film music ever

every time i see a picture of rfk jr i assume someone edited the sharpness on the photo and deep fried him but he just actually looks that ruddy irl

Read one Edith Wharton short story and now I simply must stan

My favorite band of the past decade is coming out with a new album!!
