I waffled over today's #JanuArty theme: Space. I considered some vast landscapes. But then I recalled this one, in which "space" is the subject and conflict. This is the lip of Brooks Falls, a prime fishing spot for Alaskan brown bears. These two boars are negotiating this limited space, tensely.

Today's bear is 602. 602 is an adult male around 11 years old, and he gets so fat he looks more like a mountain than a bear. 602 doesn't hold a place in the dominance hierarchy because he only spends time at Brooks River in the fall, and the big boys mostly ignore him.

503, often called prince of Katmai. His birth mother was 402 but due to unfortunate circumstances she separated from him when he was a yearling. 435 Holly adopted him and raised him to independence. 503 is now entering the prime of his life. Many expect him to be top bear someday.
