Attention all @westernu.bsky.social microscopists. We're offering a 3-afternoon series on the main computational approaches needed for analyzing micrographs. Deconvolution, segmentation, and colocalization will be explored in-depth, alongside hands-on tutorials. Session are FREE but space is limited

What I came home to after work today. #goats

First cheese of 2025 (a chevre), plus the weekly sourdough.

Effect of tightening a single component on my 3D printer. Went from unusable vertical walls to walls as smooth as silk.

Are you, or your child, thinking about university? Have some free time today? If so, come by @westernu.bsky.social for our Spring Open House...and don't forget to drop by the Microbiology & Immunology booth while you're here!

We have Babies! 🐐

The photo doesn't do it justice, but last night's lunar eclipse did not disappoint!

✅Need a culture rotator that fits a small incubator ✅Only have $60 ✅Have a 3D printer ❌ Our old model not tough enough for you? Of course, I'm happy to ✅Share the design with you www.thingiverse.com/thing:6969790

I am excited to announce the latest preprint from my lab. In this study we uncover a genetic network that mediates #macrophage proliferation during #atherosclerosis. This process produces disease-causing cells, and can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Everyone thinks that B cells make antibodies. And everyone is correct. BUT…B cells are also phagocytes! More on this interesting discovery can be found in our new preprint, which is a product of a collaborative research project led by my colleagues in the Kerfoot lab: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

It's the Friday before a long weekend, and the image analysis code I've been fighting all day is finally working. So much for heading home early today 😢 😊

I'm brewing a beer today with grain I grew & malted myself, hops from my garden, and wild yeast harvested from the bark of a tree in my yard!

Three today, and the days not done!

We are hiring a TT Asst/Assoc Neuro prof! Research focused position with some teaching in Neuroendocrinol/physiol. Translational neuro research in any sub discipline for human disorders/disease would be ideal. Please RT. careers.uoguelph.ca/job/Guelph-A...

Charlee was one of the first goats born on our farm, and has been a steadfast part of our lives since. You could always trust he to be first to the gate for scratches, and to headbutt you when you milked her. Today she passed unexpectedly. We're going to miss you, little girl

I teach a module on commercial fermentation that includes 3 hours on brewing. I've prepared aroma samples, fermenting the same wort with 6 different yeasts. This year I've added two samples with whirlpool hops, fermented with us05 and cosmic punch to illustrate biotransformation. Dets in alt text.

Today, my 10 y/o son got an A+ on his math test, then laid me flat out on the ice with a wicked cross check 🏒. I've got a bruise the size of a dinner plate forming on my arse. I've never been happier to be a dad!

Half the backyard rink is thick enough for skating, so we had a mini-tournament! #hockey

Malting is nearly complete. On the left is a germinating barley kernel, on the right is a kernel that I've stripped of its roots and hull. The acrospire is about half the length of the kernel. Once it's 75-100% the length of the kernel it will be time to dry and toast this malt. #beer

The easy part is done - bread is baked for tomorrow. Now for the hard part, not eating all of it today.
