A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

RIP to the U.S. Institute of Peace — nearly all staff members have been fired.

I keep coming to Bluesky and wishing I had something to share. The truth is that I am feeling unhopeful. I don’t know how this all ends well. All I know is that I’ve got work to do - internally and externally - and I will do that until I can’t anymore. And I guess that’s going to have to be enough.

My son’s friend just said, “I’m not sold on people, but dogs are fine.” I resonated with that.

Random things bringing joy: - Bluegrass covers of non-bluegrass songs - Making a friend at the gym - Seeing a piece of scripture in a completely new way after doing some Greek word study

On Groundhog Day I’m always reminded of my Grandpa who said that if Phil sees his shadow, it’s six more weeks of winter. But if he doesn’t, it’s only 42 days.

We won’t gain anything with cynicism. We must find what’s worth protecting and remind ourselves daily why we are angry, heartbroken, and resisting. And then we respond, as a community, with the resources on hand. Cynicism is not one of those resources and it doesn’t serve the community.

2 questions: What is one thing you’re doing today to care for yourself? What is one thing you’re doing today to care for your neighbors? Define it as broadly as needed. But this is important work.

Rochester, MN! Come check me out at Thesis Beer Project on Wednesday! I’ll be there from 6-8 for their One-Off Wednesday.

We make the world a better place buy loving hurting people, not by hurting hateful people.

There’s nothing to say that hasn’t already been said about this. Bishop Budde was faithful in her proclamation and the inability for people in power to hear it is not new. Jesus spoke out about this pretty clearly in Matthew 5-7 and numerous interactions with religious and social leaders.

Spending a great deal of energy checking in with marginalized communities. Friends. Acquaintances. Colleagues. Neighbors. Parents of kid’s friends. Be with your people. The only way we survive this intact as people or society is by being in intentional community.

I know lots of people are remembering the Jan 6th insurrection attempt today. It continues to be one of many events that has shaped my outlook and opinion of politics and culture. It sits in the pantheon of 9/11, the 2008 recession, COVID, George Floyd, and my trip to Namibia.

Tried another wood stamp. Not the best, and the red looks rather murdery, but it’s something.

Walking into the post office today with the pre-paid package, right past a whole line of people waiting to talk to two frazzled workers, has to be the most exhilarating experience I’ll have all day.

It’s #BandcampFriday, which makes it a perfect time to check out (and buy for a low low price) my new EP! bryanodeen.bandcamp.com/album/done-i...

It’s out! I wanted to get this out before December leaves me in the dust. Here's some new songs I've been working on. I recorded them at St. Peder's, so the reverb is all natural. #originalmusic

I’ve got some new #originalmusic I’m working on. I’m hoping it will be up on Bandcamp by the end of the week. In the meantime, here’s the album art.

Preparing for #Advent and listening to Show the Way by David Wilcox on repeat.

Nothing keeps me humble like starting a recording project.

I would love to hear a Republican justification for this action (or inaction). All of this talk about protecting kids had a chance to be put into effect and they are choosing to actively hide evidence against one of their own. Some integrity would be nice.

Finished reading the Lord of the Rings. Every time I read it, new things stand out. Today I was taken with Frodo‘s observation that Sam would never be happy if he wasn’t whole. Frodo leaves, in part, because he realizes that. And I think that’s a place that many of us are at - becoming whole.

If you’re a creative of any kind, this is the time to start figuring out your intentions. What, if anything, do you hope to accomplish? Why are you doing what you’re doing? Because art can absolutely be weaponized and censored. Don’t let anyone decide for you what your art is for you.

Hello! I’m a pastor (ELCA), songwriter, MN transplant, runner, husband/father, and reader. You can expect a random assortment of thoughts, videos, and pictures relating to all of these things and more, sometimes often and sometimes not so much. But definitely sometimes.
