"[T]here remains an urgent need to improve the healthcare delivered to incarcerated people. Rather than try to medicalize corrections infrastructure, we advocate for an approach that takes as much medical responsibility out of the hands of corrections departments as possible."

My rule for general audiences is use jargon, but sparingly. People are perfectly capable of learning new terms and they desperately need them.

There's something that @adriennemareebrown.bsky.social regularly says which is that you don't need to live in someone else's imagination. I think that it's so important to hold on to this. Work to create the world YOU want to live in rather than to succumb to the one designed by your enemy.

It’s not how you think on drugs, it’s how you think with billions of dollars to your name.

I probably would have been writing a ton about Project 2025 in 2024 if it were not for the genocide. I'm sure that's true about a ton of the best policy researchers out there. The impact of Democratic Party-backed genocide comes through in a thousand different ways that are largely not measurable

"[S]olitary confinement is akin to torture, and ... restrictions on it are necessary to shield incarcerated people from excessive cruelty in the system. Before the [HALT Act]'s passage, prisoners could be confined to a cell for up to 23 hours a day."

Local news has picked this up, noting, “Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris also appeared to be in attendance at the event, although he has yet to offer a public statement after multiple attempts to contact his office.“ You can see him downthread. www.khq.com/news/attende...

Medicaid cuts not only increase arrests & charges but change how cases proceed. By reducing pretrial supports, programming, and sentencing diversion options, cuts could significantly boost the *rate* at which people are sent to jail/prison (not just incoming case #), costing more in money + harm

The GOP is signaling major cuts to Medicaid are coming. Recent studies have shown cuts to Medicaid have a big consequence that gets typically ignored: crime increases. boltsmag.org/medicaid-cov...

W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.

"[Felony murder] is a horrible abuse of prosecutorial power that lands people in prison for decades or even life for a murder they did not commit."

Staffing at the HUD office that pays for housing and support services across the country is slated to be cut by 84%. Advocates warn such heavy cuts could make record-high homelessness even worse.

“The roughly 15 million recipients of Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance benefits — many of whom are severely disabled and destitute, or are orphans — are among the least politically powerful people in the U.S.”

Maine Republicans can’t get a law they don’t like changed so they want school to violate that law and they want the President to illegally withhold money for special needs and low income kids to force them to do so. www.bangordailynews.com/2025/02/21/p...

Call it what it is: an attempt to kill more trans people.

this is an act of unspeakable violence. it benefits no one, it doesn’t move a number on a balance sheet. it only guarantees that every one of these incarcerated transgender people will be tortured.

Just now from the state prison agency: "Those participating in the illegal job action will face administrative penalties along with Department discipline for violating the State’s Taylor Law and a judge’s temporary restraining order."

Spoke to someone incarcerated at Woodbourne last night who told me that “So far, the National Guard are nicer than the correction officers, and don’t really seem to know why they’re there.”

"The ease with which corporations shredded their DEI policies is why it’s important to note the fundamental differences between fighting to be included and fighting for autonomy and self-determination." prismreports.org/2025/02/18/d...

I wouldn’t describe it as important people in journalism “saying little” about this. People in journalism – including liberal outlets like the New York Times and Atlantic Magazine – were absolutely at the center of creating this moral panic.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

The Bureau of Prisons is moving forward with plans to move transgender inmates out of prisons that align with their gender identity and into facilities that align with their assigned sex at birth.

Trump's DOJ is preparing to put all incarcerated transgender women into men's facilities as early as next week, and according to NPR "the bureau is well aware of concerns about potential risks of assault, sexual violence and suicides"

As correction officers continue their strike and Gov. Hochul brings in the National Guard, I spoke to incarcerated New Yorkers to get their take on what's happening in NY prisons for @hellgatenyc.com hellgatenyc.com/prison-guard...

State trust lands generate millions of dollars for carceral facilities and programs every year, largely from extractive industries like oil and gas drilling, shares Grist.

At 10am, @chrisgelardi.bsky.social will talk about the prison guard strikes across New York with WBAI's "On the Count" at 99.5 fm. Here's where you can listen live: wbai.org/listen-live/

More reporting like this please … this stuff is not getting reported elsewhere because incarcerated people are disregarded as sources. Great job @nysfocus.bsky.social

New in @nysfocus.bsky.social: As New York's prison guard strike enters its sixth day, incarcerated people report varied conditions. Some facilities are making do, while others leave people hungry, unshowered, and lacking med care w/ Sara Kielly reporting from the inside nysfocus.com/2025/02/22/p...

I wrote about how particularly ridiculous it is that Senate Democrats, led by Dick Durbin, think the priority should be repealing Section 230 and undermining the very open internet we need more than ever right now. www.techdirt.com/2025/02/21/w...

Apathy for migrants & the unhoused collide in New York City, Alex Miller writes in an op-ed co-published by @economichardship.bsky.social. Harsh policies targeting unhoused people in the so-called sanctuary city ensnare newly arrived migrants, who now have fewer places to turn for shelter & support.

Why don’t we know more about postpartum depression in the criminal legal system? Women are the fastest-growing prison population, yet crucial issues related to pregnancy are swept under the rug. Uzma Rentia details the issues faced by incarcerated expectant mothers' overlooked repro health needs.

Perfect timing. We are living through the exact moment in history where there has never been less of a need for a Joe Lieberman documentary.

Some of society's most vulnerable people are locked up behind bars – and the deeply troubled correctional "healthcare" system fails them every single day. What will it take to get people the care they need? Read our new report 👇 https://buff.ly/417P7Rq

By design, it's hard for people to know if police are using AI to write their narrative reports for them, but we *are* cruising toward mass use and the chaos it will likely cause. With mass adoption on the horizon, some cities, states, and counties, are trying to regulate or ban it proactively!

At some point we need to realize that corporate media isn’t going to inform people and figure out a new plan.
