This snippet of a recently scanned KH-9 HEXAGON satellite image started a deeper look into the infrastructure used to ferry Buran space shuttles to Baikonur. Power lifting: Cold War satellite reconnaissance and the Buran space shuttle - thespacereview.com/article/4939/1 By @kennen11.bsky.social

More great stuff from Dwayne Day! www.thespacereview.com/article/4939/1

Scale model of Energia and the Buran orbiter in the T-109 wind tunnel at TsAGI. Note the turbojet nacelles on the orbiter. "Reusable Space System Energia-Buran", OmV Luch, 2004

Energia 6SL and Skif-DM (more commonly known as Polyus) at the Universal Test Stand and Launch Complex (site 250) before being erected for launch. The spacecraft mockup was so empty it had to be painted black so the instrumentation inside wouldn't freeze!

A beautiful overview of the many versions of the Energia family - well, ones that were mushed together from the limited press materials, photos, public US intelligence and insider reports made available by 1987. Note the single-chamber boosters! "Freie Welt" in 1987-ish

One of the fakest looking photos I've seen in a while. A great shot of Buran on the An-225 Mriya over Eastern Europe. from the Sergei Zhadovsky archive

Buran on final approach. "Die Sowjetunion Heute" 1988

Energia test article 4M-D on the "grasshopper" transporter-erector on the way to the Universal Test Stand and Launch Complex (UKSS) for early integration testing in 1983. via Roscosmos/RGANTD

Erection of Buran and Energia 1L at pad 110/37 in Baikonur. October 1988

"Attachment of the ground-based cryogenic hydrogen refueling system to the fuel cell" aboard Buran orbiter 2K during a pad test in 1991. Note the missing tiles and felt blankets - 2K was rolled out to the pad in an unfinished state to conduct tests with an Energia test article.

alright alright

alright alright

Buran and the mighty Antonov An-225 Mriya during a flight test in 1989. Both vehicles have since been destroyed. "Sowjetunion heute", Nr. 11, November 1989

As March approaches (as is now tradition) I kindly ask for your support in covering the running costs of the website for the next 12 months. Any surplus will help cover a new Buran knowledge base website, acquisition of more materials to scan and (of course) coffee 🫡

another round of color squeezing

The original drawing by Jean-Paul Darracq has come up for sale!

Beautiful photo of Buran on the An-225 Mriya over Hostomel in May 1989. One of around 50 slides discovered this year by Vadim Lukashevich.

Diagram of the Buran orbiter. "Civil Aviation", 1989, No. 4,

Buran test article OK-MT and Energia test article 4M at pad 110/37.

Buran docked to the Mir space station with a 37KB module held by one of the manipulator arms.

Inspection of the first RD-0120 engine delivered to NIIKhimmash for testing.

Hydrogen tank of the Energia core stage in the Rocket Assembly and Test Facility in Baikonur.

The Buran-Energia stack in the MZK building in Baikonur before the orbiter's first and only flight. "Reusable Space System Energia-Buran", OmV Luch, 2004

Trying out some crossposting tools...

A great view of the Blok Ya launch table adapter and the hot end of the Energia-Buran stack. "Civil Aviation", 1989, No. 4,

Flow vis on a model of the Energia-Buran stack after a Mach 5 run.

cropping out the С for "Union" is strangely prophetic

The Buran-Energia stack in flight. From the cover of the Russian-language edition of Scientific American (V Mire Nauki) for April 1989.

The last of the four Space Commerce Coproration posters. One of the most famous shots of Buran and Energia in the MZK by Albert Pushkarev. Designed by ACRA in Leningrad, 1989. Remastered from the Smithsonian scan by yours truly.

A fantastic photo of Energia test article 4M-D in MIK 112. Note the absence of one engine; inside the stage, a cable was attached to the top of the tank and the empty engine mount. During a pad test, the cable was put under tension and pyrotechnically severed, creating longitudinal vibrations.

And now the absolute classic: "Need a ride?" Created for the Space Commerce Corporation by ACRA Leningrad to advertise Soviet launch services in the West. Curiously missing is the Zenit, which is present in a different version of the poster. Remastered from the Smithsonian scan.

Another specimen from the set of four Space Commerce Coproration posters advertising Energia-Buran to commercial customers in the West. Designed by ACRA in Leningrad, 1989. Remastered from the Smithsonian scan by yours truly.

An alleged Energia-M wind tunnel model from the late 80s as offered by an auction house. An indeed, in 1989 a "unified diameter" version of the RLA-125 with a 4.1 m diameter core was studied, which matches the photo. The fairing in the photo would be ~5.0 m wide. Authenticity not verified though!

Here's a cool find: Buran ejection seat testing in the launch abort towers of Progress 38-42.
