Like delicate cherry blossoms dancing in the spring breeze, our time here is beautiful but brief. Why waste these precious moments building walls when we could be building bridges? Let's pause, breathe deeply, and allow joy to bloom in our hearts like flowers reaching for the sun.

This is really great. Congratulations to @guijacquemet.bsky.social and all authors. #PaperThemeTune can be anything from the atypical album Milijard by Circle, who are Finnish and also really great.

In the deep sea, we know all about romance. ❤️ Female gossamer worms (Tomopteris spp.) produce a pheromone that attracts males and signals them to shed sperm into the water. This, in turn, signals the female to release her eggs—a behavior called swarming.

No, this is not a disembodied floating tongue! It's a ctenophore (comb jelly). Beroe sp., Anilao #MarineLife #Invertebrate #NaturePhotography 🌊 #Blackwater

Protistologists work around the world in many languages and alphabets. At JEM, we want to meet you as you see yourself. Now authors can also include their names in any script they want in published papers at JEM. Learn how in our Checklist for Manuscript Preparation: bit.ly/3G3PANH #protistsonsky

Trump admin pulled Princeton's grants, citing their NOAA-funded research "suggests that the Earth will have a significant fluctuation in its water availability as a result of global warming. Using federal funds to perpetuate these narratives does not align with the priorities of this Administration"

First attempt at #ExM in my lab was a success, after a training boot camp by king of the method @dudinlab.bsky.social. Lots of details to iron out, but here is a pretty picture of Cryptomonas (testbed species) #protistsonsky (confocal: Anne Walraven)

I've been trying to collect spotted salamander sperm for a few years--male salamanders leave jelly packets called spermatophores in vernal pools for the females to pick up later. I think I've seen them before, but just didn't understand what I was looking at (harpoons!). Human sperm cartoon for ref.

For today’s TLB episode, I have the amazing Brittany Sprecher on to talk about two different groups of #protists and how they’re connected! I’m going to make the claim here that this is the only podcast that has ever talked about “dinotoms”. #scicomm open.spotify.com/episode/3ZDp...

To light up your weekend, and give you a mental break from the saddening and depressing news from overseas, I give you some happy little Droseras growing in their natural habitat. Happy #SundewSaturday 🐸

🧠🦠🚨 New preprint alert! We’ve built the first trait database for Amoebozoa, and showcase ecological insights and evolutionary patterns. If you're into protists, soil ecology, or functional biodiversity - this is for you! #ProtistsOnSky #MicroSky 🧵👇

Sound on for 30 seconds of spring zen with peepers and wood frogs and pine trees galore.

Groundbreaking study in Cell from @leventallab.bsky.social: phospholipid asymmetry is a defining feature of the plasma membrane and cholesterol fills the holes — major implications for how this membrane works. A #lipidtime must-read! www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...

With the 2025 UN Ocean Conference approaching & the High Seas Treaty poised for ratification, there is a need & opportunity for collective science action to inform global ocean protections. Our preprint explores collective science for ocean biodiversity data & conservation: tinyurl.com/4cu987ea

🚨New preprint out! We show that Arcella spp., a shell-bearing amoeba, controls the abundance of the filamentous bacterium Ca. Microthrix parvicella, the main culprit behind sludge bulking in wastewater treatment plants. Interested in applicability of protists? Read along! #protistsonsky #microsky 🧵👇

First night for helping amphibians across the road locally tonight. Rained all day >40F at night. One spotted salamander stole the show.

Gene synthesis is often the most expensive part of protein engineering with generative models. Happy to have played a small part in this work, where Chase developed a method for precision library construction at scale, with per-gene costs as low as $1.50. @philromero.bsky.social

"For now unfortunately, it is sometimes easier to find a new centrohelid species than to find a known one again." Wow! Worth checking for any #protistsonsky follower. Gorgeous images, amazing explanations. Congrats @zlatogursky.bsky.social and @amoebadiscovery.bsky.social

This interview is really good and highly recommended!

Bonus testate amoeba timelapse from a student enrichment culture. Such beautiful fun in the microbial world. #protistsonsky

It is April 1, but inland Maine is still frozen in places. My EvoCellBio students sampled a frozen lake and we came out with some cool #protistsonsky (and kind of okay little animals).

just started watching and he's talking about the importance of NIH funded research: "let me repeat 99.4% of FDA approved drugs were funded by NIH research" 🧪

We have an open 4-year PhD position in the Slotte lab at Stockholm University, to investigate genomic signatures of selection associated with pollination mode shifts. Full ad: su.varbi.com/en/what:job/... Apply by April 22, 2025 via the University application portal (link). Please repost! 🧪
