Big news out of Spokane, where the Cowles family is donating the Spokesman-Review to a new community nonprofit. www.spokesman.com/stories/2025...

Here's the script, folks. It's now or never. Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121 Local office numbers: www.congress.gov/members/find... RTs appreciated.

Just thinking about how the gutting of the American administrative state and end of US economic stability is likely drastically reducing the fertility rate among my age cohort…

Seattle Fire just responded to a driver hitting someone on a bike at Rainier Ave S and S Norman Street. The person who was hit was transported to the hospital with an "obvious broken arm" and other injuries including a possible concussion. This was a hit-and-run.

The Monarch #butterfly embarks on one of nature's most incredible journeys, migrating up to 3,000 miles from #Canada to central #Mexico. These tiny travelers, with wings of vibrant orange, navigate the vast distances using the sun and Earth’s magnetic fields, defying the odds

King County is holding an expensive special election, the second this year already, for an obscure levy renewal. Has anyone thrown around the idea of a minimum turnout threshold for special elections? Similar to a quorum? Could disincentivize pushing low salience votes into low turnout elections.

Hey, maybe I missed it... did Hegseth and Waltz resign yet for that Signal security breach?

Note to fellow journos: If only one "economist" agrees w Trump tariffs—as evidenced by fact that this particular "economist" is now being interviewed and cited everywhere as only "expert" willing to publicly defend them—consider confirming that he's actually an "economist." Check CVs, for example.

Excellent read from @theurbanist.org on the challenges facing Sound Transit. Personally, I think it's time to change its governance to have a directly elected board.

This paper was making the rounds, but did you notice it has a key contradiction? They divide cities into two groups (high and low housing supply constraints), and estimate the supply elasticity—how much quantities change in response to prices. Result: no difference! 1/

One consequence of restrictive development in urban cores: Most of the employment growth in the western US since 1990 has taken place in high wildfire hazard areas. Via Joiner, Walls, Wibbenmeyer 2025. media.rff.org/documents/Re...

Big business is eroding the very essence of our community. Corporations have turned to abusing the levers of power, for personal gain. Disentangling and asking them to pay their fair share is the way forward. Join us: WilsonForSeattle.com

going to need to start hearing from governors what they intend to do to protect residents of their states from the federal government

Some context here: For Washington to approve state managed rec and commercial salmon fisheries, the fisheries they approve must comply with incidental take permits issued by NOAA. These permits allow limited impacts to Endangered Species Act listed populations.

Did any of these get an end run around the Land Use Committee?

Here's is my experience from the financial crisis of 2008 (and Covid). Even though the whole way we are doing and funding science has changed significantly, people's shortcuts for determining whether or not you are "succeeding" will take longer to recalibrate. /1

SCOOP: WA Democrats are allegedly plotting a Hail Mary to bypass Gov. Ferguson's threat to veto wealth tax, asking for approval of the people instead of one overbearing executive. www.theburnerseattle.com/post/wa-demo...

This amendment on SB5041 (Unemployment insurance for striking workers) was passed via voice vote instead of a roll call vote. It is cowardly to vote against workers without having to go on record for it. Workers have a right to know which elected officials betrayed them.

Look, Bruce Harrell pretending he cares about progressive taxation after a decade and a half long political career of opposing it. This head fake is what you do when you have an election coming up, a bunch of ugly scandals, and a crappy record on the merits. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

Growing up, I lived on a street without sidewalks because, despite city funding, one property owner didn’t want their “decorative fence” torn down for it. Luckily none of us died or got hit.

The Virginia Inn says "failed negotiations for an equitable lease" with the Pike Place Market PDA will force the restaurant to close April 27. "On our behalf, please direct your grievances to Pike Place Market chairs Devin McComb ([email protected]) or Zack Cook ([email protected])."

Fun update: I first have to convince 25% of my neighbors just to do another speed study before I’m allowed to convince 70% of my neighbors to install the humps — if the county has the budget

I live on an unsafe road, so my wife and I have been asking the county for some safety measures (speed humps, maybe). The county agrees it meets the conditions for safety improvement, but we have to get 70% approval from all affected properties. Feels like the only question should be "safe or not."

Reminder: This story dropped less than 3 weeks ago + no one involved has been held accountable.

Will someone tell Bob? @ronpdavis.bsky.social jacobvigdor.substack.com/p/fact-check...

Great reporting from @amysundberg.bsky.social here. Thanks for highlighting the governor’s letter to the legislature, which includes some of the first signs of softening on both cuts and new revenue. notesfromtheemeraldcity.com/crime-falls-...

The Shared Streets Bill SB 5595 would not have happened if not for @staterepjuliareed.bsky.social, who cares about her district and reaches out regularly to hear priorities.
