The "cultural Christian" Elon Musk may want to familiarize himself with the book of James, chapter 5.

"Risk society" is helpful here. A risk society is one which dumps onus on individuals to manage risk. Bad water? Buy bottled. High bank fees? Don't have bank problems. Problem is, 1) individuals can't manage many collective risks, and 2) they also have varying abilities to manage individual risks.

A lot of evangelicals are critiquing this comment from Andrew Tate. These same evangelicals put Trump (and Musk) in office. Trump had 5 kids by 3 women, and Musk had a dozen kids (or so) by 3 women (or so).

So, depending on your ideology and what it would mean to "save" your country, literally anyONE can justify anyTHING.

Vance: If you can survive Greta Thunberg for 10 years you can survive Elon Musk for a few months. In what world does a young woman using words to create change by herself compare to the world's richest man being given free reign to the apparatus of the US gov't?

It's so clear that paternalism is a baked-in property of white evangelicalism. The line is always "You're going to be so much better off, trust me." But they're really only talking about people *like them*.

Disgusting. A private prison CEO tells investors he's thrilled about all the business he's going to get from the Trump Administration. People making money off of human misery. I would say "God help us" but many of his followers are the people that are cheering this on.

Data often show people get more conservative as they get older. So, as it turns out, liberals get more conservative and conservatives get more fascist.

Visited Waco recently. This is the house we first lived in when we were married. Caspian was born there. I built that shed in the yard and put up that sign on the telephone pole to protect neighborhood kids. It's a special place.

Reason, logic, argumentation, are not going to get us out of this. Music, dance, film, painting - these things might have a chance. I would love to know where to send my students for renewed vision. Where do *you* go? Please tell me.

Photo from the Global Flourishing Study team gathering at Baylor a few weeks ago. Great group of researchers.

Dump your TSLA stock.

It's not the job of Black folks to coddle the sensitivities or tiptoe around the emotional immaturity of white folks. We don't "own" cultural performances like the halftime show. It isn't "ours." I'm not trying patronize. I'm trying to point out a real problem.

White guy here. Wasn't upset about black people performing the halftime show or women playing football. Just sayin'.

This really paves the way for that @carrieunderwood and @seanfeucht DC residency we've all been clamoring for. www.npr.org/2025/02/07/n...

At the rate we're going, we're going to end up with a Trump Temple, not a Trump Library.

It's ironic that someone who thinks "competent white men" must be in charge "for things to work" joined team Trump, because the President is only two of those three things. www.snopes.com/fact-check/t...

"Someone needs to stop Elon Musk" hits about the same as "thoughts and prayers."

Aren't the same people demanding that NGOs stand on their own without government funding the same people demanding the government give them federal money so they can run their private religious schools?

Just had the privilege of hearing a young woman share about her life being transformed by the message of Jesus. From a place of deep darkness to an almost uncontainable hope. That's the gospel we want. Not the counterfeit version peddled about. #makethegospelgoodnewsagain #mggna

You know who has the ability to shift the narrative right now? Conservative pastors. It's a fight against right-wing media, yes. But conservative pastors can change the narrative. So what's it going to be? Political idolatry and power, or sacrifice, service, and the kingdom of God?

If you're relying basically on men in their early 20's to do all the data theft (as reports say) that's a major 🚩🚩🚩. There is no more braggadocious, unbalanced, and desperate for approval/desperate for a fight demographic than men in their early 20's.

Just read all the comments on Fox News article about retaliatory tariffs. MAGA seems prepared to go through all manner of hell, believing one day Trump's plans will work out no matter how painful the process, near term or long term.

Blowing up the individualistic perspective is why we do sociology.

The most incompetent white people on earth blaming black and brown people for a plane crash is peak weak whiteness.

If the President is immune to prosecution for criminal acts related to the presidency, maybe he should also be immune from receiving $25m settlements? 🤔🤔🤔

"America first" is incompatible with "the good news of the kingdom of God."

If you don't want the federal gov't to fund NGOs like Catholic Charities you are also making the argument for taking away tax-exempt status for churches. "If the charity can't stand on its own it should shut down!!" you say. Careful, you may get what you ask for.

Do the same people who demanded freedom to attend church during COVID also demand their fellow believers be free to attend church w/o fear of ICE waiting outside? Let's be clear: significant portions of the American church are functionally apostate. baptistnews.com/article/quak...

Back visiting @Baylor after about six years away. Much has changed, particularly contextualization around the slaveholding legacy of key founders like Baylor and Burleson. Baylor statue remains w/new signage. Burleson has been relegated to a hidden courtyard.

New work just dropped. We examine connections between types of forgiveness and experience of depressive symptoms at various levels of perceived closeness to God and religious attendance (in white and South Asian samples) www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

That's some weak masculine energy.

Back to my @Baylor people and my @Harvard people in Waco tomorrow for a research gathering on the #globalflourishingstudy.

1990's evangelicals: "If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you??" 2020's evangelicals: [Jumps off cliff] "Make America great agaiiiiiiiinnnnn!"

I thought we are a Christian nation again. Why is notre dame losing??

You are welcome to go to Mars. Take your people with you, please.

People who complain about identity politics forget that white folks also do identity politics. Whiteness isn't the "neutral" option everything else deviates from.
