A federal judge blocked 3 transgender women from being transferred to men’s prisons and denying them gender-affirming health care in compliance with Trump’s executive order. Trans people face a heightened risk of violence when confined in prison facilities that don’t align with their gender.

NEW from me: Why has Patrick Soon-Shiong touted RFK Jr repeatedly and run interference for him at his paper, the LA Times? Maybe because his biotech company has 3 applications pending at the FDA, whose parent agency Kennedy is about to be running. prospect.org/power/2025-0...

Work like this is why we need the Chicago Reader in Chicago.

“I think what makes us safer is community. I think what makes us safer is resources. And I think it makes us safer to bring us together—instead of technology that is specifically designed to tear us apart.” Another *MUST* read from @mulchy.bsky.social about Cook County's sprawling EM program.

BREAKING: Federal judge temporarily blocks Trump administration from implementing anti-trans Trump orders that would stop trans-related medical care in federal prisons and lead to trans inmates’ transfers. This followed a hearing in DC earlier today. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Axios [Jan 31] -- Federal websites tracking health care information on HIV prevention and transgender care went dark this afternoon. Also gone was information on contraception and gender-based violence. [by @rikiwilchins.bsky.social‬]

This dataset is the source of the incredibly limited population-level data we have on trans youth. I’ve used it, and studies based on it, in reporting and research dozens of times. It contains extensive data on other public health topics. This hampers public accountability reporting.

A Boston federal judge has blocked federal prison officials from sending a trans woman to a men’s prison. The case is under seal and the order came down Sunday, according to Reuters. www.reuters.com/legal/us-jud...

ATTN: All feds. I am here. I'm also in D.C. and able to meet in person if needed. Today, I am particularly interested in any information regarding the implementation of Wednesday's OPM memo directing agencies/departments to take action by 5p Friday regarding the anti-trans "sex" definition EO.

the headline is not “trump blames deadly plane crash on DEI” but “trump seizes on deadly plane crash to attack minorities”

We're within sight of $5,000 today! Let's see if we can get over that line. Thanks for donating and sharing!

I just donated $50 to @transjournalists.org because they do important work and deserve the support. I strongly encourage anyone who can match me to do so. It also feels better than becoming more overwhelmed from doomscrolling: www.transjournalists.org/donate/

is it uncharitable to say, i hope the new york times leadership gets not one moment of peace after this

Every just asking questions op-ed, every piece that parroted rapid onset gender dysphoria as if it were real, every paper that platformed “parental rights activists,” you helped make this happen. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

This morning, we learned that President Trump fired Board Member Gwynne Wilcox, whose Senate-confirmed term runs until 2028. This move must be called out for what it is—a frontal assault on the NLRB, its employees, workers, and the very idea of an independent civil service. 🚨

Since Jan 21, the plaintiff, who has never been housed in a men’s facility, says she was placed in solitary confinement and was told she’d be moving to a men’s prison.

NEW: A transgender woman in federal prison sued the Trump administration on Sunday, arguing that President Donald Trump’s executive order defining “sex” is intentionally discriminatory, violates her constitutional and statutory rights, and puts her in danger. Overnight, at Law Dork —>

Are we still posting the nasty emails we get from readers? Cuz lord I just got a doozy lol

🧵 Please share. This targeting of trans individuals is outrageous and alarming! National Defense Bar Condemns Executive Order Removing Safe Housing, Healthcare, and Rape Protections for Trans Individuals Incarcerated in Federal Prisons Washington, DC www.nacdl.org/newsrelease/...

Important story out today in @theappeal.org by the great @byadamrhodes.bsky.social theappeal.org/trump-execut...

RFK Jr. will get a HHS Sec nomination hearing at Senate Finance Committee next Wednesday at 10am, per Sen. Crapo.

Illinois, largely considered a midwest safe haven for abortion, is losing clinics: "The affiliate said the influx of patients traveling to the state post-Dobbs and more patients needing financial assistance contributed to the decision."

I wrote a brief appeal about why you should donate to the Chicago Reader to keep my newsroom afloat. Please donate if you can donorbox.org/save-the-chi...

Well, this is a great start to the day! I found out this morning that I’ve been nominated for a @glaad.bsky.social Media Award. Proud and honored. Thank you!

"On most days, it’s difficult to walk down the bustling street without passing a tamale stand or a roadside merchant selling ornate garments." "But on Tuesday, there was hardly a vendor in sight." Just like early 2017. Our immigrant communities are forced into hiding.

One of the darkest, but less reported, aspects of Trump’s anti-trans order this week IMO is that he directed the DOJ to remove protections for trans prisoners from Prison Rape Elimination Act guidelines. Story at @theappeal.org today from @byadamrhodes.bsky.social: theappeal.org/trump-execut...

Short dispatch from me about reporting ~in these times~ wisconsinwatch.org/2025/01/trum...

Trump's executive orders targeting trans people behind bars flout years of legal precedent, federal policy, and guidelines issued under the Prison Rape Elimination Act — but whether courts agree will be another question.

Even before Monday, LGBTQ+ advocates and prison watchdogs were keeping a close eye on how Trump could target trans prisoners. Then the executive orders came. My latest for @theappeal.org theappeal.org/trump-execut...

Stay tuned for a piece from me & @theappeal.org about what yesterday's order means for prison policy.
